Movie is Good reflection of books,
By
This review is from: The Golden Compass (2-Disc Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
Some of the people reviewing this film don't seem to know thatit is describing events in Pullman's multibook series, "His Dark Materials". The movie is an astonishingly accurate portrayal of the first book, which takes place in another universe with fundamentally different ground rules, and very different societies. The questions left open in the movie are also an accurate reflection of where the issues stood in the book. So the people who are complaining about this really need to take issue with the book rather than the movie.

Oustanding!,

This review is from: The Golden Compass (2-Disc Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
This is my favourite fantasy movie from 2007--I liked it even better than Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The casting, direction, writing, and art direction are superb. The story is compelling and deep. Although this title is aimed at the teen set, the quality of this film transcends generations. I was particularly impressed by Dakota Blue Richards who is the perfect Lyra. For some inexplicable reason this film did not do well at the box office. I really have no idea why. It did not seem to have any competition when it came out. If you missed it, now is your chance to catch it and discover a great movie to share with your whole family.

Too Fast, Underdeveloped,
By
This review is from: The Golden Compass (2-Disc Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
There was little introduction, and the whole film sweeps by in 1 hr 45 mins, with little character development, and little explanation of what's going on. I found it hard to care about the characters, and to comprehend the writter's world. It was stressful to watch. As opposed to Lord of the Rings which is slowly introduced with much explanation of what's going on and why. I don't know why they didn't make this film at least half an hour longer to take some more time for this, and to slow things down.I liked the story though, and presume the book is much more satisfying. The fantasy world is beautifuly depicted visually. Perhaps the film is meant to be watched repeatedly till one understands all the finer details. It is very much like a flip side to Lion Witch and Wardrobe. Shame they may not come out with part two, as there are loose ends at the end of the film which add to the unsatisfyed feeling.
