Though no one ever utters the name in Matteo Garrone's powerful and disturbing Gomorrah, the Roman director drags the dark deeds of the Camorra into the cold light of day (the mob is based primarily in Naples and Caserta). Inspired by co-writer Roberto Saviano's explosive exposé, Garrone (The Embalmer) takes an observant, documentary-like approach to the Neapolitan Mafia and their not-so-covert infiltration into Italian society, from waste disposal to high fashion--with the US in their steely-eyed sights. Though the timeline is brief, a large cast creates the impression of an organized-crime epic on par with The Godfather or The Sopranos, but without a similar sense of style or glamour (since the film's release, several of the non-professional actors have even gotten into trouble due to their real-life Camorra connections). Unlike those Italian-American predecessors, it also takes awhile to sort everyone out; once their identities become clear, the narrative picks up speed, with no direction for any of these characters to go but down into no-questions-asked conformity or ignominious death. Three of the five narrative strands revolve around a 13-year-old gangster wannabe (Salvatore Abruzzese), a decent dressmaker (Salvatore Cantalupo), and two delusional thugs (Ciro Petrone and Marco Macor), who look to Al Pacino's Scarface for inspiration. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Gomorrah arrives in the States with the highest accolade an Italian movie can hope to receive: the imprimatur of Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese, who knows a thing or two about thugs and wannabes. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good movie, Dec 20 2009

This review is from: Gomorrah (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This italian movie is in the same veins as City of God. It might be complicated at first because they don't explain right away how the camorra works, but I found it rewarding at the end and I wanted to know more about the subject. Thankfully, the Criterion edition packs some great supplements about the making of the movie and the author of the book on which the movie is based.

5.0 out of 5 stars The question is: What if you were in their shoes?, Sep 24 2010
This review is from: Gomorrah (DVD)
This film absolutely stun me. We follow the story of peoples born in a world of hatred and violence that they can't escape. Early on they must choose a side, and some of them if ever they want to leave, must 'pay' for the cost of their freedom, either in blood or money ... We follow the live of 5 different peoples leading a seemingly normal life, but soon we face the absolute violence in which they live. There is no music to support the scenes, and this make this film even more genuine, making it like a documentary. One scene where the two young boy bid farewell to their friendship because from now on they are enemies, shows us the absurdities of the twisted world in which they are. After watching such a film, one can question this: is their really a human nature, or in the end, it's the environment in which we operate that dictate our choice and action? A must see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting and stunning... like watching a documentary..., May 24 2010

This review is from: Gomorrah (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
The Italian movie "Gomorrah" is riveting and stunning. It is filmed in a documentary style and after a few minutes you feel like you are watching real life events. The subject matter is dark and disturbing - this is not a movie for the weak at heart. Also, it has a structure much like Robert Altman's "Short Cuts". In other words, there are about five short stories taking place throughout the film and some interconnect more than others.

The subject matter is The Camorra, which is described in Wikipedia as:
"The Camorra is a mafia-like criminal organization, or secret society, originating in the region of Campania and its capital Naples in Italy. It finances itself through drug trafficking/distribution, human smuggling, prostitution, toxic waste disposal, construction, loan sharking, gambling, arms smuggling, extortion, protection and racketeering and its activities have led to high levels of murder in the areas in which it operates. It is the oldest and largest criminal organization in Italy."

This is the dark underbelly of Italy that you have not seen. This is not the romantic Italian world of food and wines, the museums, art, culture, or music.... - prepare yourself for a view of the Italian criminal underworld and how it is connected to all facets of life in Italy and around the globe. This is an eye-opening movie that does not glamorize the subject matter.

Filmed on location in Naples, Italy at significant risk to the film crew - as the Camorra went about their daily business in the surrounding streets of the city. The Blu Ray transfer by Criterion is first-rate quality and the additional features are educational and informative on this edition. The Criterion edition of "Gomorrah" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
