Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-Elizabeth Enright's 1957 Newbery Honor book (Harcourt, pap. 1990) will continue to entertain and enlighten today's children in this audiobook format just as the print version has for generations. A brief opening train ride (one of the only somewhat dated segments in the book) introduces listeners to Portia and Foster, siblings on their way to spend a summer in the country with their cousin Julian and his parents. But from that point on, the magic of discovering a small summer community, derelict for decades as its lake slowly dried, is just as enchanting today as it was nearly 50 years ago. Even Foster's play at robots and space stations contributes a contemporary feel to the story's details. The story is beautifully written with fairly sophisticated language, and it is even more of a treat to listen to thanks to a charming narration by Colleen Delany. Her lightning-fast transitions from voice to voice are absolutely on target, and she voices each character distinctly. The unfolding tale of the once-upon-a-time summer colony at the turn of the 20th century is wonderful, and Delany's clear, artful reading adds value. This story of a summer of discovery and adventure would be an outstanding choice for elementary school youngsters with a good reading and vocabulary skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elizabeth Enright is a wonderful writer!, Mar 15 2005

This review is from: Gone-Away Lake (Paperback)
Finishing this book is like waking up from a very *good* dream - you just don't want it to end; you feel like you can *almost* & touch, taste, smell & hear it but it's just there, out of reach ... sigh ...

As another reviewer said, just this side of fantasy, but plausible enough to make you think, "What if ..."

If you're one of those people who is always looking wistfully at old abandoned farmhouses as you drive past, imagining what they they looked like full of life & people, and wondering if just maybe there still might be "dolls in the nursery & dishes in the kitchen", this book will be almost painfully tantalizing, LOL.

Elizbeth Enright is a master writer; her descriptive passages are absolutely perfect and she holds our interest exceedingly well.

And no, nothing *BAD* happens. (Well, my 9 yo daughter was rather disturbed by Mrs. Brace-Whatsit's kitten disposal methods but that was the *only* disturbing part & even that led to positive results). And yes, the story is *HAPPY*. What the heck is wrong with that!? If you want doom & gloom, read a newspaper.

If you want to escape into an alternate world for a while, read this very pleasant & extremely well-crafted story.

Suitable, (in my most humble opinion, of course!) for ages 8 to 108.

Side note: The line illustrations by Joe & Beth Krush are absolutely perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back in Time, Feb 23 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Gone-Away Lake (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book because it is like a fairy tale but a little more realistic. When Portia and Julian cross the swamp its almost like going back in time and the people they meet are from that other time. I would recommend it to people of all ages who enjoy fantasies about the characters.
