4.0 out of 5 stars Finally, Sep 9 2005
By Abe Froman - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Gonna Get It Wrong Before I Get It Right (Audio CD)
Grrrrrrrrreat album... as Tony the Tiger would say. It is such a great album. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because Sam isn't re-inventing the wheel... but he sure is steering it in a really cool way.

His vocal is incredible... every performance on each tune expresses the feeling behind it so well.

The writing is great. Modulations and the sort keep it interesting. Great pop songs. They get to the point and don't last too long. The album clockes in at 40 minutes, 31 seconds... that ain't too shaby.

The production is stellar. Sam and Richie Biggs produced while Taylor Harris engineered. The acoustic guitars and drums sound AMAZING. The whole vibe of the album is pretty consistent which, of course, is pretty dang important.

The cast is just great. Taylor Harris plays most of the drums, and does it in a way that will make drummers reconsider the way they play. Matt Slocum, who was in Six Pence None The Richer, plays all the bass, some guitars, a lil piano and even cello. John Davis, who was in the powerpop group Superdrag and is now a solo artist in his own right, plays guitar on a couple tunes and adds some cool back ground vocals. Scott and Christine Dente (aka Out Of The Grey) contribute a cool guitar solo and beautifull back ground vocals, respectively. The star contributions come from producer Charlie Peacock (Sam's pop) on keys, Ben Folds drummer Lindsey Jamieson singing back ground, Flemming McWilliams adding background as well, and John Mark Painter playing some rad trumpet.

All in all, this is a cool disc. It makes me happy to hear a well produced, well written and well performed album. From start to finish, there isn't a bad apple in the bunch. The melodies will light you up like you'll never believed. Buy this, you'll like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fresh New Voice, Oct 8 2005

This album is head-bobbing, foot-tapping delight! (I know, totally cheesy, but true...) Sam's light melodies are surprising and infectious. I love the pairing with some great background vocalists--David Mead, Fleming McWilliams. This is a great album that you'll thoroughly enjoy. Buy it today and say you knew Sam when...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff, Nov 2 2005
By Ben Hodges - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Gonna Get It Wrong Before I Get It Right (Audio CD)
This record is fabulous, an amalgamation of Elliott Smith and Sam Beam in a way. His music is diverse, not nearly homogeneous like Beam's, but his voice is just as appealing, maybe more.

As another reviewer said, Sam ain't inventing the wheel, he's just made a good one. Good stuff. Easy listening, pretty, simple, but not at all simplistic. Excellent.

If you're on this page already, you probably should just go ahead and buy it. You can't NOT like this record.
