Product Description

Gonzo is a tour de force that will take you into the world of American writer and iconoclast Hunter S. Thompson.

About the Author

Hunter S. Thompson's books include Fear and Loathing in America, Screwjack, Hell's Angels, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Proud Highway, Better Than Sex, The Rum Diary, and Kingdom of Fear. He was contributor to various national and international publications, including a weekly sports column for ESPN.com. Thompson was famous for his free-wheeling, intoxicant-fueled observations on politics and society in Rolling Stone. With wit and salty language, he created a public persona of a hard-drinking, gun-toting anti-authoritarian. He centered his reporting around his crazy behavior and called it "gonzo journalism."

Hunter S. Thompson died February 2005.

Steve Crist has edited and created numerous art and photography books including The Polaroid Book, Marilyn by Andre de Dienes, Jazzlife and Steve McQueen by William Claxton, and The Curse of Lono by Hunter S. Thompson and Ralph Steadman. In 2006, he created and published the internationally successful Gonzo by Hunter S. Thompson. Steve is the Publisher of AMMO Books, and is currently in production with Todd Oldham on Charley Harper - An Illustrated Life, and Lulu by Lulu de Kwiatkowski. He lives in Los Angeles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thompson's history from behind his own camera lens, Jan 13 2010

Most fans of the good Dr. Thompson know him from his words (or more unfortunately, from Johnny Depp's caricature in the Vegas film). Gonzo is a unique book that shows HST's prowess behind the camera lens, documenting his own life, work and experience. The book is organized in a loose chronology of his life, with related excerpts from his writing. From his service days on Eglin AFB in Florida to his time with Sandy at Big Sur and in the Caribbean to the Vegas era and on the '72 campaign trail, Thompson beautifully captured the large and small elements of the world around him. The most fascinating images are not of Thompson's public persona, but the private photos from his time in Puerto Rico, Woody Creek and Key West. HST used the camera to augment his memory; images of a hotel table filled with his odds and ends are as memorable as the more famous photos! The only glaring omissions are photos from the last two decades of his life; the book would be a more complete document if it included images of his entire life.

The 'literary edition' now available is in a smaller format than the original release, but retains the high-quality uncoated paper of the original run. The graphic design of the book is excellent, with vibrating color schemes as surreal as HST's world! I can't recommend it enough to fans of Dr. Thompson.

okay, so i am a huge fan of hunter s. thompson, and i was waiting so bad for the delivery of this book. as soon as i came home i saw it wrapped up and i immediately started to tear it open. So yes, it was the book that i wanted, the only small problem was i was expecting the "LARGER" version of the book. (as in dimension wise)

i am a lil picky, but most definitely i will return it, due to the fact i did wanted the bigger book than the smaller one.

:(
