Product Description

Ben Grant is fed up with always meeting the wrong girl. Having just celebrated his 29th birthday by being dumped by his 29th girlfriend, he decides he can't go on like this. Why can't he be as blissfully happy as his best friend Ashif, about to marry the beautiful Prithi, a bride chosen for him by his parents? Suddenly Ben has a great idea: why not ask his own parents to do the same for him? But while Ben's parents see this as the perfect opportunity to set their son on the right path to matrimonial bliss, it soon becomes clear that Ben's idea of the kind of woman he wants to settle down with is quite different from that of his somewhat traditional mum and dad. Following a series of disastrous dates, Ben starts to realize that he wouldn't let his parents pick him out a shirt to wear, let alone a woman to marry. But when Ben finally meets the girl he thinks might be 'the one', he realizes that maybe he does have something to learn from his mum and dad after all. Can he learn the art of romance from his parents and land the girl of his dreams?

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done, Mr Dunn, Jun 22 2010
By Bodicea Greene - Published on Amazon.com
Matt Dunn is a very personable and popular UK author who does something unexpected quite well...Chick lit. Though I nearly despise the term chick lit (it almost guarantees a books descent into the durance vile of fluff), any writing has to be done well, or it's not worth the trees you kill to print it. Mr Dunn writes this genre well. Very well. It's the story of Ben, who has met the wrong girl. Repeatedly. He's looking for someone he can make a life with. Enter his friend Ashif, who is engaged to marry a woman chosen by his parents. Ben has reservations about that (who wouldn't be a bit afraid of the person their parents would chose for them), but Ashif seems happy so why not give his parents a try? After all, they know better than he seems to know himself, and they've been together for longer than he's been alive. (More about that later.)More disaster and laughs follow, and maybe he really can meet the right woman. This is a light hearted work about a subject everyone struggles with. Mr Dunn writes well, and gives some funny and touching insights into the thoughts of men and their struggles with life. I found it to drag a little in one or two spots, but the ultimate test was passed with flying colours. I was annoyed when it ended, and wanted to read more. That's the hallmark of a good book. Excellent light reading. It won't change the world, but that wasn't the intent. It will make you laugh and smile.

3.0 out of 5 stars Chick lit by a man, Mar 19 2010
By R.R. - Published on Amazon.com
I love to read and read a lot. I think life is too short to labor over a book waiting for it to pick up, so the books that I start and abandon, far outnumber those I actually read. That it got read in itself is evidence to this book's readability.

If you want a classic, look no further. Please move on. For some superfical entertainment, this could be it.

Pros: fairly amusing and based on a rather original premise. The protagonist, Ben Grant, is a white man who wearies of dating. His Indian friend opts for an arranged marriage. So Ben decides he wants to give this a shot.

Cons: Chick-lit by a man is....well...still chick-lit. As an Indian who straddles traditional Indian culture and westernisation, I saw promise in the plot even if the auther had no objective of rising above the genre. The book falls short in exploiting the cultural overlap premise. Arranged Indian/eastern matches are done very differently from the western blind-date or being-set-up-by-parents practices and this difference does not come through. The conversations in the book come off frequently seem contrived. Ben's discussions with his dad or Indian friend that are supposed to be introspective and funny are often flat and a tad too long.

Summary: The book has its moments of humor that while not brilliant, are funny enough to keep you chugging along.....depending on how eaily amused you are.
