Good Neighbors: The Complete Series 4 includes eight choice episodes, including "Away from It All," in which Tom and Barbara take a small vacation from their threadbare life, nervously leaving their agrarian routines in Jerry and Margo's inexperienced hands. "Our Speaker Today" concerns a distraction for Barbara when she becomes a popular guest lecturer to different groups, speaking on the subject of self-sufficiency. Neither she nor Tom is particularly enthusiastic about the endeavor, especially when Barbara is invited to speak to a crowd of libidinous, misfit teen boys. "Anniversary" is the memorable show that more or less ended the series with a crisis faced by Barbara and Tom, but "When I'm 65" is the official closer here. For good reason: the episode celebrates the enormous popularity of the series in Britain with a visit to the show's set by the queen. It's a little startling but unique to see. --Tom Keogh

A Good Show!,
By PLR (Toronto) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Good Neighbors Comp Series 4/R (DVD)
This is the final season of a great TV show featuring Richard Briers, the only "name" at this time, accompanied by then little-known actors Felicity Kendal, Penelope Keith and Paul Eddington. The story centres on Tom and Barbara Good who have embraced the self-sufficiency movement popular in 1970s England. Their backyard becomes a minature "farm" as they are determined to live completely "off the land" in the midst of suburbia. Of course, their lifestyle is often viewed skeptically and scoffed at by their next door neighbours (and good friends), Jerry and Margo Leadbetter. Kendal and Briers make a great down-to-earth couple and Eddington and Keith serve as great foils playing the stuffy Leadbetters. The set also includes the 1978 "Royal Command Performance" where Queen Elizabeth II attended the final taping of the show.

Some more great shows here, with one possesing a major gut-wrenching swerve. Neat to see the royal command performance too.

This Must Be The "New" Companion To Series 1-3,
By Bobby Poe Jr. - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Good Neighbors Comp Series 4/R (DVD)
I am eagerly awaiting this release. I notice that BBC Warner is the studio, so hopefully this version will be of as high technical quality as BBC Warner's release of Series 1-3. The main complaints about the previously available version (by Acorn Media) of Series 4 was that the transfer to DVD was not very good.Glad to see the Royal Appearance is still included with this new version and right now the price ($19+) is fantastic! Update: after purchasing this set, I can happily say that the quality of the DVD transfer is on par with the release of Series 1-3. Also, the Royal Appearance episode is really a treat and a much better "ending" for the series than the somewhat bittersweet "Anniversary" episode. One of the few series I'll want to go back to and watch again and again for all time. Now if someone would just release "The Norman Conquests" (which features Richard Briers & Penelope Keith as husband and wife and stars Tom Conti in a fantastic performance) and "Lovejoy" (in an upgraded, reasonably priced box set), my life would be complete... 17 of 18 people found the following review helpful

The best of classic BBC,
By AnnaMaria Jackson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Good Neighbors Comp Series 4/R (DVD)
Good Neighbors still stands head and shoulders above many classic Britcoms as the funniest and most engaging. The situations and actors are brilliant (this is arguably Penelope Keith's best role), and its filled with enough wit, double entendre, and genuine silliness to make it enjoyable over and over again. Regardless of which position you are in the rat race, you'll find this series hilarious and meaningful. Be sure to get every season - its definitely worth it! (This DVD contains series 4 and the royal performance filmed later)

Does it really have to end?,

I am a Good Neighbors fanatic. I've only been a fan for about a year and a half and I cannot get enough of the Good Life! I have watched the whole series strait through about 8 to 10 times and it never gets old. Just like some of the other reviewers have stated, "Everytime I watch this series I seem to catch onto something else that I haven't caught onto before, it's just that GOOD!" For some reason I am a bigger fan of the older british comedies than of the newer ones. Good Neighbors is definitely in my top two, right after As Time Goes By, with the awesome Judy Dench. I wish that I could have as interesting friends as the Leadbetters', or the Goods'. These characters are fascinating to watch during the in and outs of both their individual lives, and also of the whitty friendship between the two neighbors. Don't be put off just because this is an older brit comedy. Good Neighbors is one of the best that brit comedy has to offer. You will find yourself watching it over and over again like me. I just wish that such great shows as this one, could go on forever (or at least a little bit longer that this one did). Oh well, at least all of these terrific actors went onto play great roles in something else which we are able to also purchase on amazon, and thank goodness for that!
