Good Neighbors - The Good Life is known as one of the finest series ever written for British television. Some years ago, another DVD set was offered, with the final series and the Royal Command Performance, and the current offering completes the canon of Good Neighbors. Richard Briers (Ever Decreasing Circles, Henry V, All in Good Faith, and many others) is actually forty as his character, the emotive Tom Good turns the same age. You know it's a good marriage when in the first conversation you hear them have he screams to Barbara (Felicity Kendall of today's Rosemary & Thyme) "You bitch!" - for she has given him a poking-fun birthday card.
The late Paul Eddington (Robin Hood, Yes Minister, Yes Prime Minister) is Jeremy (Jerry) Leadbetter "You look like an ad for gracious living" (from Tom) "I am" (from Jerry). Eddington's star rose high and fast during and after The Good Life, and this set tells you why in no uncertain terms. He is fiesty, bickering and sometimes right properly randy with his wife, Margo (Penelope Kieth - To the Manor Born), and crawling to "Sir", his boss.
Kieth (known as Penny) isn't even seen in the first show, but she appears more and more as time goes on. It is worth buying the set just to see her throwing clay on a pottery wheel for the first time "I'm not yet imbued with any talent, you understand."
She also puts Julie Andrews away when Margo plays Maria from Sound of Music (or West Side Story? . . .) Also watch for someone prominant in To the Manor Born in one of the episodes who plays a member of the aristocracy whom Margo tries desperately to impress.
Each episode is easy to reach on the disc and presented in such a way that you'll share the experience with everyone who comes to visit. Writing - Acting - Technical - all unbelievably good. Bravo! Now stop reading this review and buy the set!
