Classic rock with a fresh twist... and ballads too!,
By Pina aka Storm (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Good To Be Bad (Audio CD)
'Good To Be Bad' succeeds in retaining Whitesnake's signature "classic rock" sound but brings a fresh twist to the band in the new millennium. A much anticipated album packed with tracks that are sure to become rock classics.

Good to be Back!,

It has been a long time coming waiting for a new Whitesnake album. Their last album, 1997's Restless Heart (billed under the name "David Coverdale & Whitesnake") was a decade ago. Since that time, David's put out a solo album (Into The Light) and toured with a new group of Snakes. That new group of Snakes has changed somewhat on Good To Be Bad: Guitarists Doug Aldrich (ex-House Of Lords, ex-Hurricane) and Reb Beach (ex-Winger, ex-Dokken, ex-Alice Cooper) remain, as does keyboardist Timothy Drury. Replacing drummer Tommy Aldrich is Chris Frazier, and replacing bassist Marco Mendoza is newcomer Uriah Duffy. David has retained his writing style of co-writing with just one partner, in this case, Aldrich. Aldrich also remains the main soloist in Whitesnake. This is both a good and bad thing. While Aldrich can play the oldies, the John Sykes stuff, and even the Steve Vai stuff, he seems to channel just John Sykes on the new material. As far as style, sound, and songwriting, Aldrich is copying Sykes so closely that there is a real lack of originality on this album. It goes so far that you can play "name that tune" with all the new songs: "Can You Hear The Wind Blow" for example directly references moments on Whitesnake 1987, right down to certain guitar flares that Sykes used to do. Basically, every single song on Good To Be Bad is a mash-up of songs from Whitesnake 1987 and Slip Of The Tongue, and you can hear the references quite distinctly. Throw in a little "Kashmir" during "'Til The End Of Time" (which seems to be based off "Till The Day I Die" from Come An' Get It) as well. Having said that, despite the lack of originality, Good To Be Bad is still a very enjoyable listen and a very welcome return. David's voice is in fine form, perhaps even stronger than it was on 1997's Restless Heart. The album has a lot more life to it than Restless Heart, although it does lack that album's subtlety and R&B moments. The band play great, kicking butt on every tune, even the ballads. The melodies are strong and memorable. The bonus live disc is the third that Whitesnake have released since reuniting (see Live: In The Still Of The Night, and Live: In The Shadow Of The Blues). So, while the bonus CD is a little redundant, if you don't have those previous albums it's great to have. It is nice to hear Whitesnake playing "Burn/Stormbringer" from David's Deep Purple days, something that he refused to do back in the late 80's. Pick up Good To Be Bad if you don't mind a band who is trying to recapture the past. You can't really blame David Coverdale. It seems every band from Kiss on down are doing the same thing these days. Whitesnake pulls it off.

A rock n roll punch to your speakers in true whitesnake fashion. David Coverdale and Doug Aldrich deliver a classic Whitesnake album. All you true rockers will appreciate the song writing and production value. Well worth the money and will play it over and over again.
