4.0 out of 5 stars A Definite Read Aug 17 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I recently discovered Martina Cole after exhausting the newest works of my usual authors. While she is an excellent author and all of her books are well worth the read, Goodnight Lady is definitely one of her best. The characters are very detailed and quickly wrap you up in their stories, making for a book that is very difficult to put down. Her writing put you in the middle of central London in the 1960s, and the years that follow as you watch Briony Cavanagh grow up. However, it would be remiss of me to review this book without including two warnings. Firstly, the stories themselves are somewhat disturbing. For example, in a number of books Ms Cole employs storylines of child abuse, (...), drug use, prostitution etc. In and of themselves those topics would not merit a warning. But it is her extensive description of the particular events that make them so cringe worthy. Secondly, the British slang terms are initially difficult to figure out. For example, police are known as "filth" by members of the lower class. However, the reader quickly picks up the terms and gets used to their use. Overall, if you are looking for a great author and storylines that will keep you riveted, Martina Cole is a must read and Goodnight Lady is a great introduction to a terrific author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exhilarating page turner April 22 2011

Goodnight Lady is my favorite Martina Cole novel. It starts out with a child named Briony Cavanagh and the horrible and disgusting things she had to do in order to survive and make it in her world. The novel spans decades and is an interesting and well written account of Briony's life right up til she is 90 years old. Loved it and can't wait to read the rest of Ms. Cole's novels. BRAVO!!

Love Martina Coles books- she has never failed in providing an interesting absorbing read and seems to just keep going - thank goodness I couldn't bear her to stop writing. her characters are larger than life and close to life. Martina cole
knows the criminal underworld she writes about, it feelsbas though she has lived and breathed it- she is able to enter the world of villains, skulduggery, abuse and violence and weave it into, compelling stories. I was a probation officer in my other life and Martina writes about the world I stood at the edge of and whose clourful people I loved and strove to understand even a little. Good one Martina we love u.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read! Oct 12 2011
By D. Williamson - Published on Amazon.com

Martina Cole is one of the best authors out there today because she is writing what she knows! She uses her own experiences and writes over-the-top best sellers. The areas in the underworld of England is where she pens a lot of her books and they are just so interesting and full of surprises as to what people do when they are hungry, cold, poor and wanting a better life. In this book; a young girl basically sells herself to a pedophile for a chance to have a life of good food, clothing and all of the basic things people should have. She achieves all of this and succeeds in maintaining a higher standard of living once she is free of the pervert. Loved the book!
