5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than I expected Nov. 29 2013
By Jaeger
Size Name:32 GB|Verified Purchase
I wanted an Android tablet for content consumption (eBooks, online news, watching movies, etc). I did my due diligence in comparing available tablets. The 2012 N7 received good reviews so I was excited when the 2013 N7 got even better reviews. (Look up Ars Technica's review.) I was a little nervous since I didn't have a ton of first-hand exposure to tablets; I had played around with friends' iPads and Galaxy Tabs but that was it. I wanted a tablet that was about the size of a paperback book. I've been a happy Android user since buying a Nexus One phone and then inheriting a Galaxy S2.

- The screen is amazing. It's the equivalent of a Mac "Retina" screen. Text is incredibly sharp. Reading anything is a pleasure.
- It comes with stock Android 4.3 without any extra skins like TouchWiz. About mid way through Nov '13 it received the over-the-air update to Android 4.4 Kitkat. As a Nexus device, it will continue to receive software updates directly from Google.
- It's half the price of the iPad Mini Retina, with comparable performance. It's the same price or cheaper than most other 7-8" Android tablets, with better performance.
- The size is perfect for me. I realize this is a very subjective point, but for eBooks and reading the news online, it's exactly what I was looking for. The W:H ratio of the screen makes it nearly perfect for movies with very little letterboxing.
- It has two speakers, one on top and one on bottom. This becomes the left and right side in landscape, giving nice stereo sound for videos.
- It turns out that the N7 is amazing for gaming also, though I don't take advantage of that as much as I'd like.

- One of the speakers gets a little crackle in it if a video is really loud.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great tablet! Dec 15 2013
By Hymness

As my first Android tablet, I'm really happy with this piece of technology. Coming from an iPad 2, and never had an Android device before, it was not really difficult to make the jump nevertheless.

This tablet is fluid, fast, light also. I couldn't be more happier! The camera could be better, but with a good source of light, it's still decent.

My only complaint could be the battery life. 9h is okay, but it's not awesome. However, I think the recent KitKat update 4.2.2 improved on the battery life.

Qi wireless charging is really great also.

I can't say about other Android tablets, but this one suits my needs and does it in a really great way!

The only reason why I can't give it 5 stars is really because of the battery life. But it is indeed a really great tablet!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Choice for your first Android Tablet Oct. 30 2013

There's lots to love about the 2013 Nexus 7 - It's a beautiful piece of hardware.

My only two complaints about the device - It could really use a Micro SD card slot and it needs a better camera. With cloud storage, perhaps the argument for a card slot is less concerning for many people, but I think the device would simply be better if it had that option. The camera is acceptable for Skype calls, but the quality isn't in line with my expectations - Even my 3 year old Blackberry has a "better" camera than this tablet.

And a side note - At the time of the review, Microsoft Office 365 is not available for Android tablets. There are alternatives in the Play store, as well as web apps that can be used, but as a Microsoft Office 365 subscriber I would like to see Microsoft support this platform.

Otherwise... I am very happy with my decision to make the Nexus 7 my first Android tablet, and the price cannot be beat for this level of quality.

This device by far surpassed all my expectations. It does everything I could ask of it... I use it as a GPS, for managing remote systems, reading, browsing, photos and vids, and I even use it for running engine and performance diagnostics. Needless to say I am very happy with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome tablet March 19 2014
By David

Google designed and Asus built? I think so! Awesome tablet, cheap, powerful, beautiful, quite perfect. Obviously don't expect USB ports and all the higher end features, corners had to be cut to limit the price, but all in all wonderful device.

The Google Nexus 5 (release 2) is the latest, fastest 7 inch Android tablet from Google (built by ASUS).  It’s incredibly fast, light and thin - but is it as good as the Apple iPad mini retina costing nearly £160 more?   Read on to find out.....

Firstly, a word of warning. This is a lengthy, thorough and in depth review to compare the two devices - not just trash one or the other. I personally have a Nexus 5 phone, an iPad Air, Apple TV and several Macs. However, I also have an open mind and limited budget.

Look & Feel and Build Quality
Lets face it, the Apple device is a beautifully slim, stylish aluminium backed industrial design whereas the Nexus is 12% lighter (290g Vs 331g), but has a matt plastic back.  The Apple is slimmer at 7.5mm compared to Nexus 8.7mm, and overall the Apple device just “feels” better quality.
Like the Nexus 5 phone, the Nexus is a VW Golf compared to the BMW 5 series.

The display on both are nothing short of incredible.

The nexus is a narrower 7 inch screen and has a super-sharp 1920x1200 display with fantastic colour reproduction.  This compares to the equally impressive 7.9 inch (4:3 ratio) screen on the Apple.

Personally in terms of screen quality I couldn’t find much between them.  However subjective, I found the Apple screen a more natural size and shape to read books whereas the wider (16:10 ratio) Nexus would be more appropriate to watching an online film.  From a more objective viewpoint, the 7.9 inch Apple is a bigger screen - in fact 26% bigger at 2048x1536 pixels, and therefore I think Apple wins this one.
