Book Description

Mar 23 2009 Gooney Bird

“Few beginning chapter books have the range of this one, from hilarity to sadness, from outrage to compassion, and few writers could manage it with such finesse.” –Booklist

It’s a cold January at Watertower Elementary School—the ideal weather for second grader Gooney Bird Greene to break out her brain-warming hat. Mrs. Pidgeon is teaching poetry—from haiku to limericks. So when tragedy befalls their teacher, her students are prepared to write the most important poem they’ve ever written. Thomas’s expressive drawings bring the characters to life in this funny, emotionally nuanced beginning chapter book. Brain-warming… and heartwarming, too!

Review

"The story unfolds with fresh humor that keeps readers interested. Thomas’s pencil drawings bring life to the characters. A fine selection for beginning chapter-book readers and as a read-aloud."--School Library Journal

"Thomas’s illustrations help the new reader see the final “poem” and imagine Mrs. Pidgeon’s reaction to their heartfelt offering of sadness for their teacher. Few books for early readers address such a difficult issue, but Lowry’s capable storytelling does it with grace—much like Mrs. Pidgeon herself."--Horn Book

"Few beginning chapter books have the range of this one, from hilarity to sadness, from outrage to compassion, and few writers could manage it with such finesse. Often amusing and sometimes subtly instructive, the fourth book in the Gooney Bird Greene series is well suited to reading aloud."--Booklist

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the gooney bird series Jun 16 2009
By S. Woltanski - Published on Amazon.com

My 6 year old daughter loves to have "Gooney Bird" books read to her. We listened to this book on the audiobook collection. All the Gooney Bird stories are great. This is the best of the four. In this story, each day the second graders learn another form of poetry. On the final day they are to make a "poem of many voices" but they discover they have a substitute teacher since their teacher's mother has died. The poem the children create to honor their teacher's mother is touching and beautiful. Sometimes a poem may be the best gift of all.

I read this to my 2nd grade class during our poetry unit and it was the perfect accompaniment. The students loved Gooney Bird. The ending is very abrupt and leaves you hanging a bit. It is a good book for kids who like Junie B. Jones books.
5.0 out of 5 stars Irresistible Mar 6 2013

My first Gooney Bird book purchase was prompted by the wonderful experience of reading other Lois Lowry books. I got this book to read to my five year old grand daughter. Her older brother was reading his own book; my husband was reading a book on his iPhone while I read aloud. About half way through the first chapter, I realized that those two had abandoned their own reading and were caught up in the story with my grand daughter and me! My grandson couldn't wait to hear it read aloud chapter by chapter. He grabbed it as soon a I set it down and devoured the whole book. Truly irresistible.
