Review

'A truly inspiring read that makes you realise if you want something enough, it's there for the taking.' The Sun Praise for Humble Pie: 'Gordon Ramsay's Humble Pie -- so exuberantly angry boastful, cliche-ridden, expletive-laden and touchingly sincere that I can't believe that a single sentence has been written by anyone but the failed footballer, great cook, telly star and businessman himself. He's the genuine bollocks, as he's so fond of saying, and this is the tale of his personal class struggle.' -- The Observer 'Inspirational stuff.' Heat 'I cannot recommend strongly enough that every BII member reads it! The book is an inspiration. Anybody running any kind of business will benefit from reading this.' BII Business magazine

Product Description

The bestselling follow-up to Humble Pie, now in paperback. When he was struggling to get his first restaurant in the black, Gordon Ramsay never imagined he'd be famous for a TV show about how to run profitable eateries, or that he'd be head of a business empire. But he is and he did. Here's how. "In the beginning there was nothing. Not a sausage - penniless, broke, fucking nothing - and although, at a certain age, that didn't matter hugely, there came a time when hand-me-downs, cast-offs and football boots of odd sizes all pointed to a problem that seemed to have afflicted me, my mum, my sisters, Ronnie and the whole lot of us. It was as though we had been dealt the 'all-time dysfunctional' poker hand. I wish I could say that, from this point on, the penny dropped and I decided to do something about it, but it wasn't like that. It would take years before the lessons of life, business and money began to click into place - before, as they say, I had a pot to piss in. This is the story of how those lessons were learned." This is Gordon Ramsay at his raw, rugged best. PLAYING WITH FIRE is the amazing story of Gordon's journey from sous-chef to superstar. In his no-holds-barred style, Gordon shares his passion for risk and adventure and his hard-won success secrets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, fantastic, enjoyable read, Nov 10 2007

This review is from: Playing With Fire (Hardcover)
Every time I mention that the fact that I admire "Gordon Ramsay" I have to defend myself from attack. For those who have seen this ex-football player in the television show "Hell's Kitchen", he can be intimidating, ruthlessly efficient and sarcastic all in one breath. But his attitude does not come from any joy of berating contestants. Gordon is a perfectionist and he wants to make sure everything is done right because it is his name and reputation that is on the line every time a dish leaves his kitchen. This book is no different. Ramsay's passions and humor translate well onto the page...also sheds a completely different light on his life. I can't put it down.
Also recommended, the book Understanding: Train of Thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great insight into the business of 'Gordon Ramsay', Mar 31 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Playing With Fire (Hardcover)
Playing With Fire was a fairly easy read for me. I have always been a fan of Gordon Ramsay the person (not just Gordon Ramsay the Chef) and when I read the back cover of the book it was exactly what I was looking for. This was not a book of recipes and cooking techniques showcasing his incredible cooking abilities, this was penned as a look into the incredible business built around the 'Gordon Ramsay' name.
The pages flew by as I carefully followed the quick rise of a very hard working perfectionist who has an ability above many others to surround himself with the right people for the job time and time again. Tidbits of information about his upbringing and his current family life tell readers that he holds both in high regard but do not get the story twisted... this is a business book through and through.
I believe that most business owners could easily take something home from reading this book and I recommend it to all start-ups and small business owners. You get a real good idea for the amount of hard work, risk, trials and determination that Gordon Ramsay went through to get to where he stands today.

Are you a Gordon Ramsay fan? Do you want to know more about how he started his career? If you answered yes to these questions then this book is a MUST HAVE! This book tells how Gordon Ramsay started out his career, met his wife and how his father in law helped him with this career. I am a HUGE Gordon Ramsay fan, and I love reading this book, it tells you a lot about him and his attitude that he has. I have not completely finished the book yet, but still highly recommend it if you are a "true" Gordon Ramsay fan. It is a must have if you are a fan!!! (This is not a cookbook!!)

This book is a fantastic insight to the world of Mr. Ramsey and how he got his business up and running. If you are interested in the restaurant business, this is a fantastic read. Even if you want nothing to do with the industry, the book is still full of many good life lessons that can be applied to anyone's life and career.

I am a fan of Gordon Ramsay and his style. I highly enjoyed reading this book as it allowed an insight into how he became what he is today. If not a fan or just looking for an entertaining read you would be better looking else where. If you are a fan as I am however you will definitely enjoy the book.
