Well done piece on John,
By
This review is from: Gospel of John, the (DVD)
If you are looking for an accurate version of the gospel of John, then this is your DVD. It's well acted and enjoyable to watch. It's a little long to see in one sitting--it's some three hours in length--but what's nice about the DVD is that you can shut it off and come back next time. This is the entire gospel, or 21 biblical chapters in total. It beats reading it on your own, and in three hours you have lived through a book of the Bible! Henry Ian Cusick is a bit serious for the part, as I'm not convinced Jesus was as dour as he portrays, but generally he does a fine job. The crucifixion portrayl is nowhere near as graphic as The Passion of the Christ, yet the DVD box says that it receives a "PG-13" rating because of "violence involving the crucifixion." However, I had no problem letting my three young girls see this film in the theater. One minor criticism is the choice of Bible translation that was used, which was the Good News Bible. I'm wondering why a translation like the readable NIV wasn't utilized. The NIV was used in the Matthew videos, and I just think it reads much better. The weakest chapter was the reading of John 1, which was disappointing, to say the least. Otherwise, this is a fine film and is worth the price to keep this set in your library. I also recommend the Matthew videos.

BEAUTIFUL AND MOVING,

This review is from: Gospel of John, the (DVD)
WHAT A POWERFUL AND MOVING FILM. MADE IN 2003 IT HAD VIRTUALLY GONE UNNOTICED. THERE IS SOMETHING VERY PURE AND GENUINE ABOUT THIS FILM.THIS FILM DOESN'T INSULT THE INTELLIGENCE OF THE VIEWER AS THE MORE RECENT BIG BUDGET HOLLYWOOD FILM THAT DEPICTS THE CRUCIFIXION OF CHRIST WITH ITS GRATUITOUS SCENES OF VIOLENCE. I RENTED THIS DVD AND VIEWED IT WITH MY YOUNG DAUGHTER, AND FELT THAT PEOPLE OF ANY AGE CAN FIND IT INSPIRING.

Amazing Production!,

This review is from: Gospel of John, the (DVD)
This is a well produced movie that does an excellent job in bringing the book of John to life. The interaction with Jesus with the Pharasise shows the conflict and unacceptance of his message in a believable interaction. The narration helps fill in the gaps for what is not spoken. The actor playing Jesus does an excellent job portraying him as a man who loves his opponents and is pleading with them to understand why he came. He doesnt portray him as a man who "acts" holy like Charleton Heston does with his Moses portrayal. He is very believable in the role. Overall an excellent movie.
