Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Kimmel, author and founder of Family Matters ministries, likens many Christian parents' attempts at rearing children to putting together a puzzle without first studying the completed picture located on the box's cover. Kimmel states that families of faith tend toward extremes, either being overly permissive or overly legalistic. This is not a particularly new concept, but Kimmel pulls it off with interesting storytelling and sound biblical parallels. He says Christians frequently believe that the battle for a child's heart and soul is fought on the outside-with rigid rules and boundaries-when in fact just the opposite is true. He underscores the importance of communicating the unconditional love that Christ offers and affirming this timeless message of grace to one's family. Despite the numerous examples the author cites where parents fail, this text is overwhelmingly upbeat with hope and possibility: Parents who strive to live a life of faith characterized by daily trust in God will pass on this message of possibility and potential to their offspring. Kimmel asserts that this "radical" mode of parenting will meet the three essential needs in kids' lives: for security, significance and strength. He assures parents that these needs can be met with grace-laced love, purpose and hope. Kimmel's gentle heart is evident in every chapter, and his obvious passion will spur frustrated parents to keep at the task with new resolve and optimism.

Review

"Few writers are as well equipped as Tim Kimmel to teach parents how to fan flames of youthful self-determination and at the same time avoid self-destruction. His longtime parental and pastoral experience thrusts his readers into the hottest contemporary issues and offers a cool anxiety-damper. Grace Based Parenting tames the family inferno with biblical know-how--a spiritual fire extinguisher for young Christian families."
- Dr. Howard G. Hendricks
Bestselling author, speaker, & professor at Dallas Theological Seminary

"Aren't you glad you worship a God of grace? Tim Kimmel has done a great job of reminding us as parents that we are the model of God in our home and we need to be good grace--based parents."
- Dr. Kevin Leman,
Author of Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone Needs Grace, Oct 21 2010

This review is from: Grace-Based Parenting (Paperback)
Grace Based Parenting outlines Dr. Kimmel's foundational understanding of what parenting should be: i.e. we should parent how God parents us.
If you are looking for a book on parenting, then this is an excellent choice. Dr. Kimmel is easy to read and understand. He uses a lot of illustrations that we can all relate to; illustrations that speak to and encourage our ability to parent in a way that embodies grace. However, don't assume that grace simply allows everything. Let me quote from page 20: "Grace does not exclude obedience, respect, boundaries, or discipline, but it does determine the climate in which these important parts of parenting are carried out." Grace Based Parenting gives us a look at a well balanced approach to parenting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for present and future parents of faith, Jan 10 2010

Everyone who confesses a Christian faith should read this book. It challenges us to look at the authenticity of our faith. It is written with an American audience in mind but certainly Canadians could understand the toxicity of the insular Christian sub-culture that we often hide in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grace of the parents, Mar 4 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Grace-Based Parenting (Hardcover)
I have not read this book, YET, but I have read others that Tim Kimmel has written. And I have the advantage of knowing how his parents raised their children. When he was a child, we went to the same fundamental, independent Bible-believing church in Western PA. Everybody loved to go to their home because there was always something happening. His parents were strict, but accepting and gracious to all who visited them. So my comments have to be that Dr. Kimmel knows that of which he writes because he lives it.
