Too Much Going On in This Amish Story, Nov 3 2010
By C. Janes "southernsassygirl" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Grace: A Christmas Sisters of the Heart Novel (Paperback)
This book has already gotten a few 5-star reviews, and I feel really bad that I can only give it 2 out of 5 stars. It just fell far below my expectations for Amish fiction. I have read almost every book written by Shelley Shepard Gray, and while I feel that she can think up a great story, the delivery always seems to fall flat. Her style of writing reminds me so much of Janette Oke--a simplistic story, maybe a problem or two along the way, but usually a very tidy ending. It's okay to like that sort of thing--hey, Janette Oke was one of the first Christian fiction authors I ever read--but there are so many more books available now that I've found that can better grab my attention.
The book had three different story lines, and normally, that doesn't bother me. In this book, though, there seemed to be a lot of busyness and retelling of the same scenes over and over again. Maybe that can be attributed to the fact that the story covers a span of 12 days. One thing I have to mention--the portions of the story featuring Leah and Zack were just a little too weird and almost creepy to me...sharing any more than that would be a spoiler.
A lot of Amish fans may really enjoy this book, along with the previous three books in the Sisters of the Heart series, but it just didn't do it for me. I like a story--not just an Amish one--to have depth, and that was missing in Grace. I think if Ms. Gray focused on making her characters more realistic and with a little more emotion, her stories would greatly improve. Instead, I think someone at her publishing company may be too concerned with how quickly they can churn out her books....7 books in 2-1/2 years time says it all, in my opinion.

terrific tale of the Twelve Days of Christmas, Oct 28 2010

In Ohio, the Brenneman brood looks forward to getting together for the holiday; especially with the shutting of the Brenneman Bed and Breakfast. However, two people arrive planning to get away from their lives for a respite. The extended family is divided as some feels it is the Christmas spirit to welcome the guests; while Katie is outraged as she prefers they go ahead with the planned gathering.
One of the two guests, angry acrimonious Levi Bender had sent a reservation that came just before he did as it got lost in the mail for a few days. He wants to be left alone wallowing in his guilt over a tragedy as he believes he will never be Forgiven. The other is nine months pregnant Melody Gingerich who feels her family has let her down when she chose to go full term in spite of being raped. While she ponders whether her child will not be Wanted by her family, she refuses to comment why she came from Kentucky. Meanwhile the visitors and their hosts wonder if God has brought this pair to the inn for a reason especially when the snowstorm hits.
The latest Sisters of the Heart inspirational Amish romance is a terrific tale of the Twelve Days of Christmas. Readers will believe that "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven" as joyful smiles (by fans and angels) light up with the love between two emotionally battered souls helping them heal while regaining their faith. One of the best sub-genre writers, Shelley Shepard Gray provides a strong entry especially her compassionate look at the victim of rape.

Couldn't put it down...., Oct 29 2010

I think this was the fastest i've read a book to date. What a delight! Characters from the past intertwining as usual with new faces, made for a captivating, genuine and over delightful read. I had been anticipating the release of the book for some months and lets just "it was the worth wait" doesn't do it justice. Shelley, has once again found a way to truly captivate her readers with all the twists and turns & emotional roller coasters she's good at creating. If you're looking for a book that will speak to your heart and leave you wanting more, this is your book!
