Grain-free and Easy!,
By Diva4 "Carol" (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Grain-free Gourmet Delicious Recipes for Healthy Living (Paperback)
People all over the world use The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCDª) to heal gastric disorders and help with autism. The diet restricts the type of carbohydrates consumed but allows plenty of those that are easily absorbed and digested , carbs that don't encourage toxic bacterial overgrowth. The diet is effective and simple but can be a challenge when giving up grain, soy, refined sugar, and most convenience foods. Which is why beginners and the most dedicated veteran devotees will be delighted with the scope, simplicity and sophistication of Grain-Free Gourmet, authored by two women who live the special SCD diet. I have had the privelege of tasting many of the recipes at cooking demonstrations and have tried others at home. My results have been flawless and faultless and surpass conventional recipes. Grain-Free Gourmet is a real boon for many other restricted diets;the recipes call for wholesome, basic and readily available ingredients. It's a wonderful resource for both beginners and more advanced cooks. Grain-Free Gourmet is also packed with nutrition information and illustrated with beautiful photographs. Recipes are for dishes that will not only support healing but will delight the family and your friends. Having the ability to create wonderful meals, snacks and desserts is a real incentive to observe special dietary requirements. It is a great gift to yourself and for others.

Grain-Free Gourmet,

It is great to see someone trying to develop recipes using almond flour. I applaud the effort. There are some good recipes in the book such as the Open-face Rugelach and the Apple Galette. There are also an equal number of real duds. The double lemon cake was horrible. The butter pecan cookies need more almond flour and less cinnamon. Overall, most of the recipes call for way too much cinnamon! If you are going to buy the book, prepare to make adjustments to the recipes so they suit your tastes and know that some just won't work.

excellent, creative specific carbohydrate cookbook,
By Frodo (Langley, B.C. Canada) - See all my reviews

This book has lots of great recipes for cookies, muffins, main courses, ice cream and many other dishes. The recipes are well laid out and easy to follow. The specific carbohydrate diet is for anyone with irritable bowel syndrome, or inflammatory bowel disease. I highly recommend this and the other cookbook, The Everyday Grain-free Gourmet by the same authors. I have found only one negative thing-- the book has fairly fragile binding, so if you leave it open (as you usually do with cookbooks), the binding gives way and the pages start to fall out. Amazon was good enough to replace the book (outstanding service). I am treating my new book with special care.
