This series sucked me in. I read them all over a weekend and have re read them since. Usually I donate my books when I am done, but this series I have kept!

I've read a few of the Sookie Stackhouse novels by the same author -- I liked them but I didn't read the whole series simply because I'm not passionate about vampire stories. To my great disappointment, the first book in this series about a young woman who can see how people died turned out to be quite boring. The premise was intriguing and I was excited to start the book but, sadly, the story is told in a very monotonous tone with little emotion. It's like the author forgot to develop the sadness, the horror, the torment, the anger, the worry -- instead, she opted for a cool clinical approach. At some point, I started to wonder if she actually wrote the book herself...It's a far cry from the books that inspired the True Blood television series. I give this book only 2 stars out of five (bad, boring).

I discovered Charlaine Harris after watching the first season of HBO's True Blood. I enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse series so much that I was interested in trying out her other series.

The idea of dead people speaking to the protagonist is not new - it's been done in the Sixth Sense and the aborted TV series Tru Calling. Charlaine Harris brings a fresh spin to it. Harper travels around the country to help police forces solve crimes and bring closure to the families of the deceased. The murderers don't want their crimes brought to light so this puts Harper and her brother Tolliver in a lot of danger. The twist is that Harper treats this like a business instead of a calling and provides her services for a fee. Her logical mind is refreshing to see in a protagonist instead of the highly emotional characters that appear in many books in popular literature today. I am looking forward to reading the next books in the series.
