Product Description

Book Description

This magnificent, oversize, limited edition is devoted to many of the most important devotional images of Western art: great altarpieces from the Gothic period through the Renaissance. Their immense scale and central position in the church propelled the leading artists of the time to the very summit of their creative potential. These are all pivotal works in the history of art.

An individual altarpiece by a great master is the focal point of a visit to a great cathedral or, on occasion, to a museum where an altarpiece has been moved for reasons of preservation. All the altarpieces are reproduced in large size, in their entirety, as well as in their individual panels; in addition, the author has chosen remark-able details that bring out their most striking and poignant high-lights.

Included is work by such immortal artists as the van Eyck brothers, Rogier van der Weyden, Jerome Bosch, Durer, Lucas Cranach, Piero della Francesca, Mantegna, and Luca Signorelli, among others. At a time when books of great quality and luxury have nearly disappeared, here is a return to the grandest publishing traditions.

From the Inside Flap

"There are few among the many art books that land in the office at the Met that I literally pounce upon, quickly devour, and then guard jealously for my own pleasure rather than forward to the library. One such piece is GREAT ALTERPIECES, GOTHIC AND RENAISSANCE.... It is amazing that it has taken so long for such a splendidly produced and richly illustrated compendium of the world's greatest altarpieces to be published. An important book that readers will return to over and over again."--Philippe de Montebello, Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art

5.0 out of 5 stars a must have!!, Jun 30 2006

This review is from: Great Altarpieces: Gothic and Renaissance (Hardcover)
this book features both well designed illustrations and in depth texts. one piece for each artist, the book shows the most details specifically mentioned in the text. several pieces even design to demonstrate the setup which are folded in the same way as the real altarpieces. printing quality is good. few images, though, i think, are a little out of focus. but it didn't interupt me to dig out the information i need. it is hard to find another book at this level in the market today.

Fantastic book on the subject. The altarpieces are shown in their integrity wich is difficult to see even when you
visitthe different churches were the altarpieces are preserved. The texts are a little bit cold and the whole book very heavy to consult.
