This review is from: Great Baseball Movies (DVD)
This DVD offers you Three movies about baseball greats.

The first is "The Jackie Robinson Story" which stars Jackie Robinson as himself. It's a pretty good biography of his career, from his days in the negro leagues to his days with the Brooklyn Dodgers, as the first black man to play in the majors. This is the triumphant story of one mans fight against prejudice. 76 mins. b&w

The second one is "It's Good To Be Alive". This is the life story of Roy Campanella, the Brooklyn Dodgers catcher whose brilliant career was brought to a sudden end by an auto accident which paralyzed him. It stars Paul Winfield as Campanella, and directed by Michael Landon. color 100 mins.

Thirdly you get "Headin Home", a silent movie starring Babe Ruth as himself. This film captures a piece of American history as it looks at the early career of the bambino and his immortal home-run swing. b&w 56 mins.

I found this DVD compilation to be pretty good over all. The movies on it are pretty well made and well represent the era in which they were filmed. These are not all-time classics, but appear to be acurate biographies of some the great players from yesteryear. I am a sucker for a good baseball movie, but if you are looking for such with a lot of entertainment, you might not like this collection. Not at all the quality productions equal to "61*", "Field of Dreams", "Eight Ment Out" and others that we have been given in recent years. That being said, this DVD does give you more than one movie for the money, showcases some history from the earlier years of baseball, and is an good addition to a collection of baseball films. Don't expect it to be highly entertaining and you won't be disappointed, but you certainly won't feel like you totally wasted your money either. If you are a fan of the greats, this is not at all a bad choice. Enjoy!
