Mcqueen/Garner/Attenborough/Do ~ Great Escape

Amazon.ca

The Great Escape image of Steve McQueen (as "The Cooler King") astride his motorcycle has entered silver-screen iconography, alongside Brando on his bike from The Wild One. Based on a true story about a group of POWs who mount a daring breakout from a supposedly inescapable Nazi prison camp, this rousing and suspenseful WWII epic features an all-star cast, including James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn, and David McCallum. The DVD also includes a 24-minute documentary about the making of the film. --Jim Emerson

Okay....All the extras are great...and there are MANY featurettes and interviews to keep you busy for hours....BUT..the main point I want to make is for all of you who don't care about extras and figure you already have this on DVD....you don't...
this transfer is AMAZING!!! it is a real HIGH DEFINITION transfer and STUNNING is what they say on the case and its true! Many DVDs say digitally transfered....and often that just means they pulled it from a previously issued laserdisc via digital output...you have never seen this movie this pristine....EVER!

5.0 out of 5 stars gorgeous blu-ray great classic film Feb. 21 2014

The Great Escape is one of my all time favourite films and this 90th anniversary issue is the best looking version of this based-on-fact classic I've seen. It includes all of the same great bonus material as was released on the 2 disc dvd collector's set, plus maybe one more featurette, "Additional Interviews from the Untold Story". Though brief, this segment does conclude with the specific names, nationalities and ages of the "50" men. Highly recommended.

The film is great, we all know that.
The remastered audio and video alone merit the purchase.
My problem is with the way they took a 50-minute long History Channel documentary from some years back and "re-packaged" it as 5 10-minute featurettes. All they did was run the end credits of each "featurette" (which were really the end credits for the documentary as a whole) at what would have been the commercial break on the History Channel broadcast. Then, at the return from the commercial break, they inserted a "brand new intro" to make it seem like we were gonna watch a new featurette.
I guess someone in the Marketing department thought that "5 Featurettes" would read as a stronger selling point than "featuring a 50-minute History Channel documentary."
I swear, Marketing people must think we are stupid.
The end result is almost the same, except of course you have to weed through a few extra minutes of the same credit sequence over and over and over if you want to plow through the entire documentary. It's just a little insulting, IMHO.
But the movie is fun, the "separating fact from fiction" parts are interesting without being derogatory, and we get to see Steve McQueen and James Garner near their peaks.
Great film. Buy it, but take the packaging promises with a grain of salt.

THE GREAT ESCAPE – 50th Anniversary [1963] [Limited Edition SteelBook] [Blu-ray] [UK Release] In 1943, the Germans opened Stalag Luft III, a maximum-security prisoner-of-war camp designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history – brilliantly portrayed here by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson and James Coburn – who worked on what, became the largest prison breakout ever attempted. One of the most ingenious and suspenseful adventure films of all time, ‘The Great Escape’ is a masterful collaboration between director John Sturges [The Magnificent Seven], screenwriters James Clavell [Shogun] and W.R. Burnett [Little Caesar]. Furthermore, Elmer Bernstein's brilliant classic film score has rarely sounded better. Backed up by an interesting package of extra features, ‘The Great Escape’ Blu-ray is a fittingly strong disc for an excellent piece of cinema.

Cast: Steve McQueen, James Garner, Sir Richard Attenborough, James Donald, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn, Hannes Messemer, David McCallum, Gordon Jackson, John Leyton, Angus Lennie, Lawrence Montaigne, Tom Adams, Nigel Stock, Robert Graf, Jud Taylor, William Russell, Robert Freitag, George Mikell and Harry Riebauer

I've always felt this film was a Hollywood response to Bridge Over the River Kwai. Same upbeat marching music, same story of men fighting to keep their dignity in captivity. Both even have their own somewhat downbeat endings. That said, The Great Escape is a fine Hollywood film, about as good as it gets for an epic.
This edition has two features that really took me back. The first is a text commentary/fact track that gives wonderful insights into the film and the history. The second is a documentary on the man who inspired the character of Steve McQueen - a guy named, of all things, Davy Jones. His story is as amazing as the story of the film. He flew on the Doolittle Raid - the first bombing run on Tokyo after Pearl Harbor. He was shot down over North Africa and brought to a prison camp in Poland/Germany. He dug tunnels, but was moved before the escape. He was liberated by Patton, returned to flying for the Air Force, became a NATO commander, and was in the control room, he claims, when Apollo 11 lifted off and when man walked on the moon. This was an emotional short documentary.
There are other docs, including a very good documentary on the making of the film from the early 1990s. A wonderful DVD experience. If you can't see this movie on a huge screen, then this DVD set is the next best substitute. And if you want to know more about the kind of men who won World War II, well the extras on this DVD give this movie a great historical weight.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best
war movies ever made. And again, true story, good to see, so we won't forget how horrible any war is. Great acting, great plot, great scenes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Story Lousy History
Too bad they got so many things wrong with this movie. Biggest blunder is there were no Yanks in that camp. Many of the key heroes in the real story were in fact Canadians. Read more
