As is fitting for a group as powerful as the X-Men, their greatest battles are against extremely powerful adversarial groups with the fate of the Earth and universe at stake. The stories here are spaced throughout the history of the X-Men so that different members and incarnations appear. For example, in the first battle against the Sentinels, the Beast is flesh colored but in the following stories when he appears he is in his hairy, blue form.
My favorite of these giant battles is "Days of Future Past" where the X-Men are simultaneously fighting two battles. The premise is that a powerful anti-mutant sentiment arose in the United States and reached the point where the robotic Sentinels were activated. They quickly became uncontrollable and began hunting down and killing all mutants and other superheroes. It is now the future and only a few of the X-Men remain alive with most of them in captivity and all of them are wearing inhibitor modules that keep them from using their powers. Logan is free and there is a plan to smuggle jammers to the captive X-Men so that they can use their powers to break out and send Kate Pryde's mental force back in time to when she first joined the X-Men. Her goal while there is to prevent the Evil Mutants from assassinating a Senator. The future X-Men are fighting to keep the Sentinels at bay until she can complete her task.
Despite the change in members over the years, the X-Men have always provided some of the most exciting action in comics and the best is presented here. While they all at times must battle their own internal demons, their teamwork is always their best asset as they protect each other and never, ever give up.
