Product Description

Amazon.com essential recording

The pre-Hotel California years were arguably the best for The Eagles (though there were, thanks to Joe Walsh, some stellar future moments). Their mix of country, folk, and rock had a harder, grittier edge, and helped define what would become known as the Southern California sound. There was just enough of a country feel in the beautiful harmonies of "Best of My Love," to blur the edges between the genres. "Take It Easy" and "Lyin' Eyes" could easily have come out of the new Nashville school, as well. The twang that characterizes the guitar intro to "Already Gone" and the leads in "Witchy Woman" and "One of These Nights," also pays tribute to country's guitar greats. Greatest Hits 1971-1975 houses a scant ten singles, but not only does it illustrate the magic of the collaboration between Glen Frey and Don Henley, it shows the breadth of The Eagles impact on the many who would follow their lead. --Steve Gdula

The Eagles are one of America's true classic bands and their music has stood the test of time. The band's Californian Country-Rock sound is a pleasant one and the albums the band has released during the 1970's are excellent ones. Somewhat surprisingly The Eagles' best-selling album became a Greatest Hits album, namely Their Greatest Hits 1971-75. Today we have the much stronger hits collection Eagles: The Very Best of, a 2 disc greatest hits package of 33 songs that covers everything the casual fan would like from the band's albums. Yet Their Greatest Hits 1971-75 is a special album even if it's really only a 10 songs hits collection. Why? It's the best selling album in the U.S. tied Michael Jackson `s Thriller it sold over 29 Million copies and over 42 Millions overall which is no small feat. Released in 1976, 1971-75 was the first album to ever receive Platinum award and it has been selling constantly since. Their Greatest Hits doesn't even have the band's most well-known song "Hotel California" on it which makes it even more impressive. The album is outdated and there is no reason to buy this collection today besides its historical achievements which are alone a reason to own it. The 10 songs here are all very good, taken from the band's 1972-1975 albums and are great picks. Personally I only own it because of its importance and place in music history because as much as it sold it's not the best Eagles hits album and I prefer the studio albums over it. Still based on its significance in the band's history and the music here I'd say it's a 5 stars album. It's probably not the best place to start your Eagles journey and it's not even the band's best compilation but if you're a music collector then this is well deserving of being in your collection.
