Neither the greatest nor the hits,
By Zub "Zubenelgenubi" (Forks Twp., PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Bob Seger and the various permutations of his accompanying band had their music on the current radio playlists for nearly a four-decade span. Anyone listening to top-40 radio during those years knows something about Seger's music and doesn't need a review of his material to be persuaded to buy or not buy any of his reissued music today. This review then, and the rating given, is a commentary on how, with over 30 charting singles to his credit, Seger's music gets condensed down to a greatest hits collection. Not really well, in this case. First off, this compilation, with a measly 14 tracks is just plain stingy. Secondly, the term "greatest hits" is pretty simple, "greatest" being pretty obvious in its inference and "hits" being just that, ie., songs that made significant progress on the music charts. More than half of Seger's top-ten hits are not here so "greatest" is a farce. A third of these tracks were not hits at all so, so much for "hits". And, as an aside, this reviewer has an issue with these "coattail" tracks that labels stick onto compilation CD's especially at the expense of their established music. Add a "bonus" track if you must but don't omit the real stuff in the process, please. Basically, this is a really lame excuse for a "greatest hits" album and a pretty poor acknowledgement of Seger's musical history. If you must own only one Seger CD, this is the only one offering a career overview but this could have and should have been so very much better.

This disc has a wide variety of music with lots of rock, easy listening and more. All Seger's hit of which I love old time rock an roll best but mostly all the songs are good. A definite buy to enjoy music.

I can see how a fanatic might be missing some tracks here, but for casual fans this is just about perfect. Anyone who listens to radio should know most of this collection, even if not by title. Included is "Night Moves", "Still The Same", "Against The Wind", and the classic "Turn The Page". Plus you get the excellent song "Mainstreet", and the anthem for all Chevy truck drivers "Like A Rock". I also really like the closer "In Your Time". "Bob Seger" seems like one of those guys that everybody can like, and this collection is a classic rock must.
