The Green Mile,
By Duchess "Duchess" (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Green Mile (2-Disc Special Edition) (DVD)
We have enjoyed many of the Tom Hanks movies and this is another one of his that is a good movie to watch. It is nice to be able to have good movies like this to watch when there is nothing on the cable network worth watching.

There are a few strange changes with no real reason behind them: 1935 instead of 1932; Hammersmith's a lawyer and not a journalist. There are a few changes to make the story flow better: Bitterbuck is still around when Coffey arrives; Mr. Jingles arrives after him; the way Paul learns of things is slightly changed. The characters are spot on: Dead's uncertainty due to inexerience; Percy's cruel stupidity; Brutal's near-constant smirk; Toot-Toot's plain annoying qualities, and all the others. The camera work to show just how HUGE John Coffey is and how puny Mr. Jingles is, is masterful. Only problem I have is that one line near the beginning spoken in a voice that may ruin a plot twist later on for those who are good with voices. The place they switched disks is as good as any, I suppose, though I'm not sure the minor increase in visual quality is worth losing the emersion for another WB logo and FBI message and menu... Some may be pleased to hear that this movie does have subtitles (though they don't include the Français). As for the bonus features, they're the nice old-fashioned documentary sorts. The commentary is basically the Writer/Director going on random tangents that actually have a direct influence on what's on the screen from time to time (generally about the actors or scenes); a strange mixture which strikes a balance between amusing and informative.

I love Tom Hanks movies and this one was wonderful. It is so touching and sad but hopeful all at the same time. It has me crying at the end every time and I've seen several times.
