Great source for a healthy remodeling project, Mar 8 2006
This review is from: Green Remodeling (Paperback)
I find it ridiculous that most sources of information on going "green" are focused on building new houses. I think this is one indicator that even green thinkers are stuck in the consumerist mind frame. Most people who think green do not have $300,000 + the cost of land to build a new home!
David Johnston, in his book "Green Remodeling", looks at what many people can afford: Making their current home, or another "second-hand" home, a much more livable and efficient place to live.
There are tons of good resources and ideas in this book, from making water heaters and plumbing better insulated in your basement to options for re-doing your roof with longer-lasting materials. This book is very readable and pages are peppered with anecdotes, examples, illustrations, and interesting and useful diversions.
Why 4 stars and not 5 for this book? I see this as a first edition. A well finished second edition would easily garner 5 stars. Some improvements needed:
- some spelling and a few wording problems - I don't care about this stuff but some people will. Readers need to trust that what is being said in the book works. Making sure the English is nearly perfect will imply the information is nearly perfect...
- A few simple and logical aspects missing from what is a very current book. For example, LED lighting is completely ignored. If you are going to use florescent lighting you might as well consider LED lighting for some application, which uses a tiny fraction of the energy of florescent lights.
- A more balanced consideration of conservation would help. Water is a renewable resource. Electricity can be bountiful and cheap. Hydro electric dams, for example, are noted as harmful. The harm they cause is miniscule compared to the decades of eco-friendly electricity they generate. Not everything "old" is bad!
Still, for anyone considering doing a reno, or even just putting in a new water heater, this book is a great resource.
