For every gardener there is a garden,
By
This review is from: Greenfingers (DVD)
I love this movie. I also love Clive Owen, who has such a chameleon-like quality that even here you cannot be sure if he is gorgeous or a total dud. Helen Mirren plays her role in such a majestic way, long before her Oscar for The Queen, that it is no surprise she was a shoe-in for Queen Elizabeth! The plot is quite basic: a prison inmate with a green thumb goes on to compete in a national gardening competition, and it is based on a true story. How the plot evolves, however, and how these hardened criminals come to love gardening, is so well written, and highly entertaining, that I am extremely pleased to own the DVD. For me, the best scene is when Colin Briggs (played by Owen) is before the parole board. After many years in prison he has little to say and even fewer opinions, but when asked why he should be granted parole he only says (and I am paraphrasing) "it doesn't matter whether or not you grant me parole. I AM A GARDENER, that is who I am, and it doesn't matter where I do that." It is a wonderful scene in a movie full of exquisite surprises. If YOU are a gardener at heart, this is a must-see.
