The Gruffalo

From the Studio

The Gruffalo tells the magical tale of a mouse who takes a walk though the woods in search of a nut. Encountering three predators who all wish to eat him - a fox, an owl and a snake - the plucky mouse has to use his wits to survive, creating an imaginary monster who then turns out to be only too real. --This text refers to an alternate DVD edition.

I had read the book to my elementary esl students in grades 3 and 4. Then I showed the movie with a comprehension quiz. There is just enough visual and repetition to help students follow the story even those who are weaker in English. I also love that it is about 25 minutes so I can fit it in a class and build an activity around it. It is hard to find a good short movie.

My students really enjoyed it! So does my 4 year old. I just got the sequel which is also very nice.

My little guy absolutely loves The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child books. So, when I saw this dvd, I had to get it for him. It's actually done really well and is just a short animated video, staying true to the book. I would buy it again.

This is a great short movie (28 minutes) that is really well made. The making of featurette is great. A lot of care and attention went into this and reading the book after watching this DVD, it was somewhat of a "new" experience. Reading the book is still a joy, this brings the characters to life. Problem is, now I want to read the book with an English accent, and it always sounds Australian.

My kids absolutely love this DVD. I can put it on when I make dinner and they are thrilled to bits. Problem is, I usually want to watch it too. The voices and mannerisms of the characters are perfect. In my opinion the Gruffalo is the best there is.

The Gruffalo has been a favourite book in our household since before we had our first child, so when the movie came out we were really excited to see it. The movie follows the book almost exactly and is just as good. It's a short movie, I think around 20 minutes, but it seems that shorter movies are better for kids attention spans anyway. It is now the preferred movie in the house.

We love the book and have read it (literally) hundreds of times over the last four years.
I was worried the video might be a disappointment, but it was anything but! Beautifully animated, funnier than the book, and with wonderful voices and music. Be warned: Not a video you can put on for the kids then go do something else - it pulls my husband and I in every time.

My son loved the Gruffalo books and so I bought Room on The Broom movie, The Gruffalo movie & The Gruffalo's Child movie - its been almost a year and they are still his favourite shows & when you are a parent and get to watch the same shows over & over, these by Julia Donaldson are still entertaining to me a year later as well. Brilliant books, brilliant movies.

No problems with delivery or product, and this film is a real gem. My wife finds it a bit slow, but I think the pacing is perfect, and our kids (6 and 8) love it too (Incidentally - the soundtrack is really excellent as well. I bought it on Itunes). The only thing I'm disappointed about, is that I can't find it on Bluray:(
