3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but needs maps Jan 3 2010
By Douglas Long - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a good overall guide to the Alcan, with almost all the information you need on the vehicle, the roads, history, etc.

The author seems to be an avid fishermen, so this topic is well addressed.

He also devotes a huge chunk of the book to the various routes to Dawson Creek. You don't buy this book for a guide to driving from the myriad locations in the US to Dawson Creek. That's a different topic.

Little or no attention was given to hiking, mountain biking, or winter travel.

The major shortcoming was its lack of maps. A travel guide without good maps is, well, unacceptable.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book you need when traveling the Alcan Hwy. Feb 16 2012

Are you going to take a trip on the Alcan Highway? Then you need to get this book. It covers everything you could ever want to know plus many other suggestions that will keep you safe and allow you to have a great adventure. The author gives a personal touch in guiding you through Canada and up to Alaska. Since he and his family have taken many trips, he is able to give a more personal glimpse of not only the most sceanic and interesting but the more practical angle on this trip. My husband loved this book so much that he read it in one day and plans on reading it again soon. We are going to carry it in the cab of the truck for reference. If you are a fisherman, Ron gives great fishing advise too. This book is really helping us put together our trip.
