Product Description

Review

The book's strengths are its scientific rigour, its readability and its immediate applicability to daily practice in maternity care. It draws together, in an accessible format, the enormous amount of information available in the medical literature and in the Cochrane library... It is highly recommended for medical and midwifery practitioners, both trainees and those more experienced. eMJA

Book Description

The third edition of A guide to effective care in pregnancy and childbirth will be invaluable to anyone involved in the care of pregnant women, and to expectant parents. This updated guide summarizes the most authoritative evidence available on the effects of care practices carried out during pregnancy, childbirth, and immediately after birth, in a clear and readily understandable format. In addition to the details provided in the text, the book concludes with six valuable tables that list the practices which are beneficial, those of unknown effectiveness, and those likely to be ineffective or harmful. Based on the most systematic review to date, this comprehensive guide presents the main findings and conclusions in an easily readable, inexpensive, and conveniently-sized form. This third edition has been completely updated to include the new research evidence available since publication of the previous edition. Previous editions have received critical acclaim for conclusions based on sound evidence and have become a unique reference source for evaluating care policies and practices.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bien, April 17 2011
This review is from: Guide to Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth (Paperback)
Le livre est arrivé en parfait état, bien protégé pour le transport. Toutefois, du moment où le vendeur a posté le livre et celui où je l'ai reçu, il s'est tout de même écoulé près d'un mois. Ne pas se décourager pour le temps de transport.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks Dr Enkin!, Sep 27 2010
This review is from: Guide to Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth (Paperback)
I am very happy that this book is available. It allows for us to actually look at research findings and question protocols and standards that are not actually research-base (but sometimes very prevalent!). It is very easy to read and understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for obstetrical practitioners., Jun 27 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Guide to Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth (Paperback)
This book is an absolute "must have" for obstetrical practitioners and expectant parents who are looking for a way back into normal childbirth. Medicalized obstetrics has taught their students and society that "techno-birth" is not only logical but safe. This book proves that the way we have been delivering babies for the past 40 years is not the safest most competent care we can give. Hopefully, after reading this book, the practitioner will come away with a renewed sense of purpose in providing safe, logical, evidence-based care, and the expectant parent will take a firmer stand against allowing unneccessary and hazardous "routine" birth interventions. We are all the better for this book and the many years of sound, documented research it provides us. The next generation of babies will thank us!

5.0 out of 5 stars An important reference work for anyone involved with birth., Mar 10 1997
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Guide to Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth (Paperback)
This book is an invaluable reference tool for anyone involved in childbirth, including educators, doulas, midwives, nurses and doctors. It provides reviews of the current literature regarding just about any procedure of standard care that a pregnant woman is likely to encounter in the American medical system. This book provides important information, especially for anyone who is trying to convince an OB that "standard procedures" (like limiting food for a laboring woman) may not be supported by research
