Product Description

Review

"Guide to the European Unionunlike many others—is addressed not just to specialists but to 'lay people.' It is characteristically written in a clear and accessible style."
The Bulletin --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Book Description

From its original six members (who formed the European Economic Community in 1957) what became the European Union had grown to 27 members in 2007, with several more candidates for membership standing in the wings. This long-established definitive guide to the workings of the EU provides comprehensive coverage of How it works: the institutions, the mechanisms; Every area of EU competence from agriculture to workers’ rights; The effects of the single market and the single currency and the successes and stresses of the euro zone; The implications of the Lisbon treaty; The impact of the enlargement of the EU and the prospects for further enlargement and for closer political integration. The Guide to the European Union is well-established as the clearest and most comprehensive guide to how the EU operates. This new edition brings you up to date at a crucial stage in its development following parliamentary elections and a new Commission taking over in 2009 and the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty.

This review is from: Guide to the European Union: Tenth Edition (Hardcover)
I've started studying law and needed a quick refresher on the European Union.. this book did the trick. It explains everything in a quick and easy to understand way. not tedious and boring like other EU books.. would highly reccomend to anyone who is just interested in how it all works, the history etc

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice to read, but..., Feb 18 2007
By New EU - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Guide to the European Union (Hardcover)
It explains very well how everything happened, in other words it has a nice storyline. But it doesn't go into details; for that one should use Moussis' books. But those are not properly updated. 'Is there ever a good book' as one of my former professors said?

3.0 out of 5 stars Guide to the European Union, Ninth Edition, Jun 6 2010
By Charles de Saillan - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Guide to the European Union (Hardcover)
This book provides a fairly comprehensive and readable introduction to the history and institutions of the European Union. But readers should beware that this book is now in its Tenth Edition (Jan. 2010). The Ninth Edition offered here is in many ways obsolete given the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty.
