Jon Kabat-Zinn has a great series of books and guided meditations. This product has great sound, good background music and a nice relaxing pace. Jon's voice is soothing yet compelling and after a 40 minute session of listening and meditating, you cannot help but feel lighter, more relaxed and calmer. I am glad that the original tapes were dubbed onto CD's as there are a few parts to this CD that are nice to do separately (like the yoga sections).

It would be great if one could hear a sample of the CD or if the contents were described in more detail.
To be fair, I just listened 2 of the 4 CDs - the body scan and the sitting meditation. I was looking for something else when I bought this collection, that is the reason for the 3 stars. The body scan meditation CD guides you through each part of the body. It is NOT based on muscle relaxation (press and release of muscles with breathing); you are supposed to bring your mind to an specific part of the body and observe and be aware of it. It is a way of focusing your mind.
My problem is that I have not been away to stay awake for more than 10 minutes (the CD is 45 minutes long). I did not buy it to fall asleep but to deal with anxiety, so that CD did not work for me. The sitting meditation has long pauses and silence, I was also looking for a more guided meditation CD.

This is an excellent companion to Zinn's book and audio book Full Catastrophe Living. He has a great voice and his approach to guided meditation is wonderful. Highly recommend these CDs.

I had to laugh at the various coments on these CD's. People falling asleep, or simply not getting it.

There should be a disclaimer however. The CD's are meant to be used in conjunction with the book "Full Catastrophe Living" by the same author. Without the book, which outlines a plan on how to use the CD's, the CD's would be all but useless.

One fellow comlained about Zin mentioning an itch they might feel. The point isn't the itch, cramp, or random thought, it's about how to deal with those things during the meditation process. You are training your brain to be "in the moment" and aware of your inner dialogue so that you can better handle the situations you find yourself in without reacting blindly.

The Mindfulness Program is very beneficial, and I *highly* recommend it. However when I got the CDs and played the first one at home I found JKZ's voice to be, well, somewhat annoying. As one of my fellow classmates put it "I just didn't *bond* with his voice".

I find my instructors voice and instructions to be far superior and easier to follow.

I also had some 'minor' concerns with his instructions on the Body Scan CD - particularly the *way* he instructs listeners: "don't judge", and "you don't have to like it, you just have to do it". Both of those instructions could have been given in a healthier way that still honours the basic premise of mindfulness. There is a difference between not being 'judgmental' and not judging. It may seem to be a fine line, but I knew several people in the 70's (and a few recently) who became involved in cults, some far more seriously than others, and that small distinction proved the difference between those who became enmeshed (1 of whom was eventually kidnapped and deprogrammed), and those who merely dabbled but listened to their gut instincts and got out quickly. (I would highly recommend both "The Gift of Fear" AND "Verbal Judo" in this regard.) I'm not trying to imply that this is the case here - far from it; merely to say that the author could have been more careful.

That said, this is a very worthwhile purchase if you're taking the program, and even if you're trying to follow it on your own.
