DVD Review of "The Odyssey", Feb 7 2011

I really only got this for The Odyssey as I remember it when it was on a TV miniseries in the '90's. Still as good today as it was back then. Although some of the special effects are dated the story is at the heart of making this DVD special. It does follow closely to the original story by Homer. Great cast and Armaund Assante is excptional in the lead role. My daughter is studying mythology in high school and thought this was a good opportunity to introduce this to her as I remember really enjoying it when it was first broadcast on TV. It did not disappoint.
As a bonus we get to watch Gulliver's Travels with Ted Danson, which I understand, was one of the better renditions of the story. All in all very satisfied and the price was right. Glad I found it on DVD!

Educator beware!, Jan 24 2012

This review is from: Gulliver's Travels / The Odyssey (DVD)
Every once in a while I like to show a film adaptation to a work of literature covered in class--where available. But sometimes I worry that students will forsake reading in favor of movies. So often I find that film adaptations to books are not very faithful to the text, hence confusing students in the process--even if they are entertaining. This film adaptation to The Odyssey is pretty miserable. So many key components are either changed or omitted.
Take for instance the fact that Odysseus did not lose 11 of his ships until after the land of the Laestrygonians. Yet in the film, he only had one ship when he entered the Cyclopes' island.
He stayed with King Aeolus for one month, not one day as in the film. With Circe, he remained there for one year, not five as in the film. Charybdis does not destroy Odysseus' remaining ship. Zeus does after departing Helios' island.
Odysseus did not reveal himself so quickly to his son as in the film. Neither did Penelope simply rush to Odysseus when she found out he had returned. The film ruins so many great parts and facts from the text that even my students thought it was a turn off.
Was it entertaining? Sure. What young person wouldn't like to see a six-headed monster gobble up soldiers? But if it is going to be shown in a class, a teacher should really make sure to explain all the discrepancies--or at least have the students find them.
That's my take on it.

Odyssey Movie Review, Feb 27 2011

I heard about this movie from fellow teachers who have also taught Homer's Odyssey. I was interested in showing it to my students. Not only did I find the movie NEW for less than ten dollars, it was in my hand in less than a week! I recommend this movie to other teachers. View it first so that you know what scenes to leave out (there is a risque' seen involving lovers). I did not watch the Gulliver's Travels dvd yet but I plan on it.
