Classic Western adventure from America's favorite storyteller Louis L'Amour

Louis L'Amour brings you the Wild West as you've never heard it before. This classic story, complete with a full cast, stirring music and authentic sound effects, sweeps listeners back to the rough and tumble days of the old West -- when men put their lives on the line for the sake of honor, and truth and justice were fought on the open plain.

A gun for Kilkenny

A dusty stranger comes into the town of Boquilla in search of a drink after many hard weeks riding the trails. He enters the saloon, and within minutes the town bully is dead on the floor. Who is the stranger? Is he John Wesley Hardin? Or the legendary Marshal Kilkenny? Speculation and admiration run through the town like wildfire.

To show their gratitude, the townsfolk persuade the stranger to stay awhile. All the free whiskey he can drink and the finest hotel room in town are only the beginning of the good life for this man, more accustomed to the cold hard ground and meals of greasy bacon and biscuits.

The attractions of the dangerous stranger are also irresistible to the pretty young women in town. But the stranger's luck cannot continue. Someone suspects that he is not who he pretends to be. After all, according to legend, Kilkenny always leaves town after killing the bad guy. Why would he stick around this time?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Story That Makes You Grit Your Teeth, July 12 2000
By
Steven A. Bell "Even Keel" (Kemp, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Gun for Kilkenny (Audio Cassette)
This is one of those stories where you wonder how it can all come out all right. Where a multitude of wrongs must be resolved by someone willing to do right. A stranger comes to town and shortly after getting a drink is challenged by the town gun. The stranger comes out on top and everyone is convinced that the he is Kilkenny, the famous gun-fighter. The stranger does not correct their misconceptions. The town to show it's grattitude begins offering free food and services, and the stranger stays, but there are those who know how Lance Kilkenny operates and the stranger's behavior does not jive with their knowledge.

A great story made better with crisp, clear audio, special effects and well cast characters. The audio is easily heard in a car environment. Well worth the purchase price. Run time: 60 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars "A Gun for Kilkenny" expands a brief L'Amour story for audio, April 27 1998
This review is from: A Gun for Kilkenny (Audio Cassette)
This audio adaptation of Louis L'Amour's brief tale "A Gun for Kilkenny" makes for exciting listening.

The original story, published in "Dutchman's Flat," is a straight narrative story with little dialog. For the tape, scenes have been expanded and a few characters added, but it remains faithful in spirit to the L'Amour original. Much of L'Amour's most colorful prose is preserved as well.

The result is an engrossing, well-acted audio that should please L'Amour fans and general audiences as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Western Yarn, Feb 27 2003
By Mark Baker - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Gun for Kilkenny (Audio Cassette)
When a stranger rides into town and winds up shooting the local trouble maker, very few in town are upset. But, based on his looks, people soon begin to suspect that he's the famous Marshal Kilkenny. Only the man, John Hardin, knows the truth. But what harm can come from keeping up the pretense for a few days and enjoying the town's gratitude? Soon things begin to turn dangerous for everyone in the town.

I'm not super familiar with the works of Louis L'Amour, but I enjoyed this dramatization. Clocking in at an hour, it kept me interested as I tried to figure out where it was going. I must admit I did roll my eyes a couple of times at the clichés presented, but once the story got going, I was hooked and didn't notice them if they were present.

This is a dramatization, and the actors do a fine job. The sound quality is excellent, making it an easy listen in the car. My only real complaint on the sound end is that the sound effects, especially of people walking on the floor, were a little too present in the story.

Anyone looking for a way to make an hour fly by would do well to get this dramatization.
