Van (pronounced "Vaughn"), the hero of the 2005 broadcast series Gun x Sword (pronounced "Gun-sword"), roams the wastes of the planet Endless Illusion, seeking The Claw, the one-armed man who murdered his bride on their wedding day. When he gets in trouble, Van summons Dann, a powerful Gundam-esque mecha, to clobber his foes. During his wanderings, he picks up several ill-assorted companions, including Wendy, a girl who's looking for her missing brother; Carmen, an "information broker" in a skimpy outfit; and Joshua, the eager younger brother of Ray--who's also out to kill The Claw. For the first several episodes, Van and his pals stumble from one short, often silly misadventure to another. Around episode 9, the story begins to gel. The Claw isn't some casual murderer but the cult leader known as "Our Comrade," who plans to use ancient technology to remake the entire planet's society according to his will. Gun x Sword is obviously trying to be a combination of Trigun and Cowboy Bebop, but Van commands neither the film noir charisma of Spike Spiegel nor the nutty charm of Vash the Stampede. Carmen is an obvious clone of Faye Valentine from Bebop and the mecha fights are shamelessly lifted from various Gundam series. The first eight episodes do almost nothing to advance the plot, and the later ones feel padded with repetitions, mawkish sentimentality, pointless subplots, fan service cleavage shots, and endless nattering. The Complete Collection comes with a disc of extras that includes Japanese commercials, 13 episodes of Gun x Sword San, a "super-deformed" spoof with CG hand puppets, and the footage from the series voice actor David Vincent (Van) recut to propose to his girlfriend. (Rated TV-14, but suitable for ages 16 and older: violence, violence against women, profanity, toilet and risqué humor, nudity, sexual situations, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have! June 26 2013

Possible Spoilers
This anime is FANTASTIC! I love the storyline, and all of the combined elements that were put into this series.
You get the mecha aspect with some fighting robots, there is the mystery, funny scenes, a bit of light fan service (absolutely hilarious bikini episode), a touch of western...the list goes on and on.
Wendy and Van are the two main characters. You have a couple side characters who join up with them throughout the anime. They are on the search for Wendy's Brother and The man with the claw. Everything kind of leads back to the claw throughout the anime, however you get to see some side battles as they progress closer. The anime caps off most things very nicely, I would however really like to see a second season or OVA, just to see how Wendy and Van's relationship might possibly develop.
Overall a great anime, and the price is awesome. I would highly recommend this to anyone, and everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent package- the effort was evident. Feb. 10 2013

I loved the story since I saw it from the broadcast, but this box set is much more.

It's the entire series in one affordable package. Besides the quality animation and translation, I loved the extras. It includes the restored episode that was censored during broadcast and it has a bonus disc with extra materials (and includes the censored version of that episode.) I also appreciate that it has a reversible cover if you don't like the S.A.V.E logo.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Anime March 28 2012
By Lucas TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Gun X Sword is without a doubt one of the best animes out there. It borrows heavily from shows like Samurai Champloo, but makes twists that make it completely unique on it's own. The story starts out incredibly slow, but really begins to pick up from episode thirteen and on. This box set should be in any collectors set.

As for the box set itself, it comes in a wonderful cardboard box containing the DVD cases, which are made of plastic. These thick cases house every disc of the show, including a special features disc. Despite it's size in comparison to a single season, this box set will save you plenty of shelf space as compared to having all four of the indivudual seasons. Unfortunately, Gun X Sword is a measely 26 episodes long, however this is only a negative because the show is so incredibly good and manages to convey the entire story within this short period of time. While it will never get the attention and love a series like DBZ, Deathnote or Full Metal Alchemist will get, this anime is equal in quality, if not better than some of those. (Personally my favorite anime of all time.)

5.0 out of 5 stars 5-DVD COLLECTION! Dec 9 2010
By Anime Fanatic - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Just got the Funimation release of Gun Sword today and was pleasantly surprised to find that this is really a 5-DVD set. The 26 episodes of the series are on the first 4 DVDs and then there is a 5th "Extra Features" DVD in the back of the case with what I believe were all the extras included with the original Geneon releases including...YES! the 13 Gun Sword San episodes.

I think with the inclusion of the extras, it makes this set a great value, but I wish Funimation would do a better job of getting the correct information out on their releases.

The series itself is very good blending the Western/Mecha genres together. It has been compared to earlier animes like Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Trigun and the main character Van does seem somewhat similar to Spike from Cowboy Bebop. It also has an odd main villain in the form of the Claw who preaches friendship and harmony and wants to "save" the world but has no qualms about tearing apart anyone that interferes with his plans. Maybe the story isn't that original, but it does a good job of being entertaining throughout.

The packaging is pretty basic , but still nice with all 5 DVD houses in a normal size DVD case with a glossy cardboard slip-cover. I actually prefer these type of releases because of the space (and money) that is saved compared to when anime series were released over 6-8 DVDs, though I do miss the artwork from the covers and artboxes a little. The video is 16:9 widescreen and the transfer looks solid from what I've watched so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring me all of your condiments! Nov. 26 2010

Fantastic series. My personal favorite. It is great news that Funimation picked this one up and is going to republish it again. Sadly usually when this happens, they tend to cut out some of the extras from the original release. Hopefully included in this will be the goofy Gun Sword-san episodes. But I would really doubt that judging from the price. Still, great show, great characters, and it'll keep you watching old episodes again and again. Watch both dubs if you can. This is probably the only series I've seen where I wished I could combine both dubs. The voice actor who plays Van in English is exceptional. So are a few other characters. But then theres some in Japanese which are great too. Enjoy!

One of the best animes I've ever seen. Absolutely fantastic. Great writing, great characters. Almost can't be better. Actually made me tear up several times. I've watched the entire season several times, and haven't gotten tired of it yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! Feb. 16 2013

Love this anime! It reminds me of Cowboy Beebop - it's got a hint of darkness, great characters and lots of laughs.

however, the case this set comes in sucks. Part of the hinge has broken and the center things the dvds click onto are chipping away, while the first center ring has broken off part of the disc. I don't know if mine is defective, or if this is a problem with other sets, but if so I recommend putting these in a different case. However, the discs themselves are excellent quality, the show looks great and I am still pleased.
