3.0 out of 5 stars Good setting improperly chosen mechanics, Dec 5 2006
By Bruce Grubb "Bruce Grubb" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Gurps Castle Falkenstein: High Adventure in the Steam Age (Paperback)
The Castle Falkenstein setting is interesting and one can easily see why it was so popular with its Steampunkish magical Earth. That said the book is also a prime example of what was so wrong with many GURPS 3e (GURPS is now 4e) translations of other settings. Instead of using the existing Ritual Magic system in GURPS 3e Voodoo or Spirits Cambias instead tries an obvious kludge of the magic system in the GURPS 3e Basic set resulting in total incompatability with the rest of GURPS in terms of magic breaking the whole universal concept of GURPS. In fact the magic system is so imcomptatable and poorly explained that it would need to be scrapped and redone before that part of the book could even be used in a GURPS 4e game.

Outside of that everything else is top notch as one expects from a GURPS book. The races are easily used in either 3e or 4e GURPS and the setting has the rich detail one has come to expect.
