Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

This collection of 11 stories written over the past 15 years reads like a series of studies for Weiner's larger chick lit portraits. As in the novels (Goodnight Nobody; Good in Bed), smart, acerbic, 30-something women battle dating damage and broken childhoods (absent fathers in particular) in order to build their own families—or to convince themselves they still want to. In "The Wedding Bed," a new bride realizes, "I thought that every story I would tell for the rest of my life will somehow be about this: about the man who left and never came back." "Mother's Hour" tightly focuses on new toddler trauma as experienced by first-time mothers and shows how motherhood can be another conduit for woman-to-woman envy and suspicion. In "Swim," sometime scriptwriter and obsessive swimmer Ruth, her face scarred from the car accident in which her parents died, must eschew the verbal "edge" she finds so compelling in men in order to find love. One roots for Weiner's characters as they come to terms—and in some cases, heal—from disappointment and neglect. (Sept.)

From AudioFile

Stuck at home with her baby, a young mother wonders if her life would be better if she had stayed with her ex-boyfriend. To attract a young broker, she lists her apartment for sale. Characterized by the young voices of Mary Catherine Garrison and Jordan Bridges, the young women and men in these short stories are connected by the humanity of their situations. However, Garrison's voice is nasally; furthermore, she stabs at opening sentences with a brassy bark. While having a second narrator may make a difference in the tone and rhythm of the work, Bridges's delivery gives no shape to the stories or their characters. 4.0 out of 5 stars Good Stories About Relationships, Jun 7 2009
In this book Jennifer Weiner presents a series of short stories that she wrote through nearly a full span of her life (college age to the present). In them she presents intimate portraits of various personalities and their relationships with an emphasis on family, love, and perhaps unusual disabilities or crosses to bear. Some of these are quasi autobiographical. In one she portrays Nicki, a sister who can't seem to get it together to get through college, who acts in outrageous ways but who finally lands on her feet through her good looks. In Swim Ruth, who has a facial defect due to an accident, finds time out and money through helping girls with their college applications. She has a momentary misbegotten love affair and tries to branch out into helping men with online dating portraits. She struggles to start another romance and to reenter her career as a scriptwriter. In Dora On The Beach two teenagers hijack an elderly woman for money and a vacation. The author has a clean and very accessible writing style. Translator's Kiss

5.0 out of 5 stars PERFECT PAIRING OF NARRATORS, Oct 6 2006
By Gail Cooke (TX, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)

Those drawn to the novels of Jennifer Weiner, especially Good In Bed and In Her Shoes (which was made into a major motion picture) will want to listen and probably listen again to this collection of her short stories. She has the ability to create characters to whom we easily relate, individuals cut from everyday life with all of our common foibles and gifts.

These 11 stories once again capture men and women during transitional and transforming times in their lives. "Just Desserts" and "Travels With Nicki," the two opening stories were written early in Weiner's career. They reflect, to a great extent, her own life experience - the effects of divorce on a once apparently close knit family.

Josie, the lead character, reflects her feelings with, ""I had heard them fighting at night, his hissing whispers and her tears, and I knew that for the last month he'd come home late, and for the last week, not at all, but I'd been telling myself I was worrying about nothing, that they were just going through a rough patch, that things were going to be fine."

In another tale (the title story) Marlie Davidow wonders about what might have been when she comes upon her ex boyfriend's online wedding registry. Here she is with a new baby, lonely, and it's late at night. What might have happened had she chosen him?

Sometimes a tender moment, at other times tough going, each story takes on the reality of life as it is today, especially when read by such talented actors as Mary Catherine Garrison and Jordan Bridges. Remembered for her guest appearances on TV's Law and Order as well as her Broadway performance in The Man Who Came to Dinner, Ms. Garrison has a winning voice that accurately captures both joy and pathos. Jordan Bridges is a gifted actor and well he should be as he's the son, nephew, and grandson of Beau, Jeff and Lloyd Bridges. His narration is articulate, powerful when strength is needed, always very much in sync with the character he currently inhabits.

Enjoy!
