PreSchool-Grade 2-- Children are challenged to help Danny find his hamster as he travels from house to house having a snack, playing with toys, and listening to music. Danny peers through the window into each home and a bland, uninspired text invites readers to find Herbie ("He must be here. But where?"). The busy, detailed watercolors make this a difficult task for even the most ambitious perusers. In the first scene, a barely discernible hamster tail peeks out of a mouse hole; in subsequent illustrations, Herbie is pictured in a crowded aviary, swinging from a lampshade, and hiding in a piano. The simpler and more effective game book, But Where Is the Green Parrot? (Delacorte, 1990) by Wanda and Thomas Zacharias, will be far more successful with this age group. --Pearl Herscovitch, Univ . of Calgary, Alberta, Canada
