5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview Dec 15 2011

Purchased a large model of HMS Victory and wanted some detailed photos and descriptions. This book was just what I wanted. Surprise was that it contained a great deal of history that I did not know and found useful. If you are looking for a detailed history of the battle of Trafalger or Nelson's career this is not the book for you. If you want to see the restoration of the ship and a brief background on its history this book is excellent. It does not go into great detail in so far as deck plans, etc. but there is a book being published April 2012 that I think will be excellent supplement to this volume and which I have preordered: HMS Victory Manual 1765-1812: An Insight into Owning, Operating and Maintaining the Royal Navy's Oldest and Most Famous Warship (Owners' Workshop Manual).

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointed Jan. 5 2013
By Robert Hunt - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Frankly I was extremely disappointed with this book. I'm a professional model builder. I own a business and have been in business for over 9 years. I'm always on the lookout for books that will assist me in building that next model. After having bought every book on the market about the Victory, this looked like it would be a good addition to my library. I've only built the Victory kit 6 times over the past 23 years of model ship building.

Needless to say, for the price I paid for this book, it was not worth it. There's very little text or additional information in the book that hasn't already been said and written in other books. The photos are nice but most are very small and therefore don't show the kind of details a model builder would be interested in. There were only a few drawings in the book and what I was most interested in, drawings of the original ship as it looked in 1785, amounted to one, blurry and small drawing that is useless in my opinion.

Bottom line is that I'm sending the book back and getting my money back. Save your money as this book just isn't worth it. If it were selling for $4.95, it might be worth it. It's small, only 120 pages, very thin, just not good value for the money.

Outstanding book and excellent seller. I have a reasonable collection of books on the War of 1812 and the Royal Navy of the Napoleonic Wars and this one is excellent.
