3.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Green and Frugal Cleaning Guide Aug. 27 2012
By Shmonkey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you have been keeping house for awhile a lot of the tips in here might not be new to you. You will read tips that has been shared in hundreds of magazine articles, blog posts, tv segments, etc. The cleaning portion focuses mostly on using vinegar and baking soda for everything and the de-cluttering tips are along the lines of don't-forget-to-utilize-vertical-space variety. Again, nothing new. The tips are pretty basic and while it is broken down by rooms it only really covers the kitchen, bathroom, and the garage. It's cleaning and decluttering 101; a good guide for beginners but doesn't even start to cover other areas of proper housekeeping.

That being said, if you're looking for a good housekeeping starter manual, and/or you're starting to get into green cleaning, this book is perfect for you! It's just bam, bam, bam, one tip after another, which makes it an easy and quick read. All the tips are easy and utilizes tools and ingredients that you probably already have in your house (with the exception of borax).

While it isn't marketed as a green or frugal living guide I really liked that most (maybe even all) of the tips use natural ingredients that are really cheap (namely, vinegar and baking soda). Some of the tips, while easy, also requires elbow grease and or a lot of time (as in overnight). So, if you're the type of person who likes to disinfect everything and wants things cleaned quickly and easily (cleaning bubbles anyone?), this book probably isn't for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean easy! March 20 2012
By Marc Daniels - Published on Amazon.com

Cleaning up your house actually takes a lot of effort and like the author says, only a few might enjoy it. What makes this book an excellent read is the fact that it actually shows you how to deal with it with minimal effort without feeling frustrated.

Apart from the excellent tips given for general cleaning and decluttering your home which includes a cleaning checklist, the best part about the book is, it includes an extensive list on the uses of baking soda and vinegar for cleaning! I've read somewhere about the use of vinegar in some cleaning processes but this book provides even more ideas on how to use both vinegar and baking soda as your primary multipurpose cleaner! So if your home needs cleaning up, you'll absolutely need this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Suggestions for Year-Round Cleaning June 22 2012
By Rebecca of Amazon - Published on Amazon.com

Sherrie Le Masurier begins her book explaining how you can purge unwanted items therefore decluttering your home nicely in a short amount of time. She then suggests various ideas for cleaning around the house. She especially focuses on cleaning with baking soda and vinegar. While she recommends cleaning with ammonia a few times I'd stay away from using it - too strong an odor.

This book reminded me that I need to clean my blinds. A job I've been putting off for a long time. I tend to think it is a job better handled by a professional. Also her suggestions on how to clean a range hood filter was more difficult than just putting the filter in the dishwasher. I suppose if you don't have a dishwasher the advice will be useful.

There are some interesting ideas in this book, like the method for cleaning a chandelier. Very clever! I also use Sherrie Le Masurier's idea of how to clean a shower curtain. It works perfect every time.

I haven't tried it but there is a strange use for orange drink crystals which might surprise you.

In the section on what to clean with baking soda I did get a few tips I'll use in the future. I'd never thought of baking soda being used to clean stains off clothes. Also her tips on how to clean a showerhead were excellent.

What this book doesn't really talk about is disinfecting surfaces in the kitchen and bathrooms. I'd suggest you get some Clorox Disinfecting Wipes Fresh Scent, 35 ct and Soft Scrub with Bleach Cleanser. I also like Lysol Cleanser Antibacteria Kitchen Cleaner, 22 oz.

Some other cleaners I can't live without include:

Scrubbing Bubbles Extend A Clean - works well for showers and sinks

Windex Economy Size Vinegar Multi-Surface Cleaner-32 oz. - Perfect for mirrors, windows and shining fixtures

Bon Ami 04030 Bon Ami Cleaning Powder, 12-Ounce - Great for stainless steel sinks and tough jobs that require extra scrubbing

Murphy Oil Soap Multi-Use Wood Cleaner with Orange Oil - Many uses but especially good for wood kitchen tables

Endust No-Wax Cleaning & Dusting Spray, Lemon, 10 oz (284 g) - Smells great and keeps furniture dust-free for longer

Clorox 4 Count S.O.S Steel Wool Soap Pads 98041 - For tough cleaning jobs in the kitchen and bathroom. Especially good for pots and pans and baked on grease on glass pyrex dishes

4.0 out of 5 stars Great tips for cleaning your home May 8 2012

Sherrie has made cleaning your home seem like a manageable chore. She's given lots of helpful tips.

I like the idea for keeping SOS pads from rusting and some of the uses for vinegar. The idea of putting vinegar in a spray bottle so it's ready to use is a great idea and putting soda in a cheese shaker. She even gives a recipe for cleaning drains. That's great because sometimes when you have a plugged drain, you don't have any Liquid Plumber on hand.

I like the fact that she explains the properties of both soda and vinegar and why they work.

Great advice.
