1.0 out of 5 stars Attention to details are lacking in this book Oct 7 2011
By emomon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I'm returning this book tonight on the way home, am very disappointed.

I downloaded the code from visualizetheweb.com, the 1st project in chapter 2 does not correspond to any project I downloaded. The author leaves out many important details on where to start placing html, for example he has an example of creating a <form...> but doesn't tell you if you should place that in the Section tag, outside the section or what? There are numerous example of this. Also, he just writes "View it in your favorite html5 browser. IE9 and Chrome render it very differently and neither one is right. A walk though on using a smart phone emulator would have been nice. There has to be better books than this out there...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginner or advanced developers Dec 21 2011
By Patrick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review
HTML5 Mobile Websites is an interesting book to try and categorize. It's not a book for beginners and it's not a book for advanced developers. My main problem with the book is the broad but shallow coverage of several frameworks. Matthew David seems to have a fondness for JQuery Mobile (not a problem; I also find it to be the best mobile framework). I'm not sure why he covered so many other frameworks, the majority of which are still in beta.

My other issue with the book is caused more by the rapid change in the frameworks that makes this new book already out of date. The book covers an alpha version of JQuery Mobile however the framework has already gone through beta and been released. Several major changes have happened during these version changes; luckily the examples in this book are so simplistic they should still work.

I would look for another book if you're looking for in-depth coverage on mobile site development. If you are looking for a simple overview of several different frameworks this book might be for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars intermediate-level introduction April 11 2012
By l2 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review
HTML and web site development is a diverse enough subject that no one book is best for everyone. This relatively slim book does not have enough detail to cover everything, nor does it have enough introductory material for absolute beginners. It may work for intermediate-level HTML professionals, such as people with extensive experience with earlier versions of HTML. These people don't need a rehash of HTML basics and already know how to use web-based reference material. An overview book like this one presents the new features of HTML 5 in an organized way. If you want more details or example of a particular feature, they are readily from the usual online sources. Yes, there are more detailed books that also serve the intermediate market, but this one is cheaper and lighterweight (more portable).
