DON'T BUY THEIR "FOAM INSERT" OR THEIR "BIO-MAX!!! They have completely changed their products and are now selling the cheapest made technologically unsound aquarium media on the market. What used to come with all their HOB filters, and I own the 30, 70, and the 110, was a real foam sponge, and real ceramic bio rings. I bought the foam and the bio-max as replacements for my 30 and 110 after a tank mishap. What came in their boxes is not what came with my filters when I bought them. The foam sponge is now a plastic thing, like the old Tuff-e scrubbers, with holes so big it no longer filters anything but the largest pieces of waste. IT IS NOT FOAM AND IT DOES NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO FILTER! The Bio-Max is no longer ceramic rings!!! The Bio-Max is now solid smooth-sided pellets of chalky powdery non-porous material that do not have the ability to be a biological medium as ceramic ring are capable of being. I am forced into considering switching to a Marineland HOB and starting over as the AquaClears, with this kind of POORLY DESIGNED, CHEAP MATERIAL will never maintain the superior bio-filter the old media was capable of and certainly WILL NOT keep my water clean and clear any longer.

HASH(0xa6233b58) out of 5 stars Excellent product, but save your money Sept. 7 2008

I love the Aquaclear filter and this sponge does a great job of keeping the water clear. However, there is no reason to replace the sponge unless your original one gets damaged. During your weekly water change, rinse and squeeze the sponge in the water you take from the aquarium. It'll last forever this way and you'll keep the beneficial bacteria in the tank where it's going to keep the ammonia and nitrites under control.

This is the standard AquaClear 110 filter insert that you may find in your LFS or box store. I order them here because I usually can't get locally on a consistent basis. They last a good amount of time but don't seem to be quite as well made as they used to be. The material seems to fall apart faster than it did a few years ago. Nothing is made like it used to be anymore.

I am very happy that there are vendors like these that sell items online @ cost versus stores that rip you off with mark up & tax! This vendor has saved me more than 50% of $ for these filters for my aquaclear over the past year! I'm glad I found this online because stores sell these things @ $8! If you're like me & don't care about packaging but are down for value & saving $, buy it!! So it doesn't come in that fancy box, but it's 1/2 the price. You decide, looks or cost?! My fish are now living in better quality water for 1/2 the price!

I ordered this sponge as an addendum sponge for my AquaClear 110 Aquarium Power Filter. I don't use carbon or zeolite in my filter so the added sponge is good for some extra bacterial growth and as another layer of mechanical filtration.

I was slightly disappointed that the newer AquaClear sponge was obviously made from a different material than my older AquaClear sponge. The newer material is more porous and not nearly as effective at catching particulates. I also think there is less area for bacterial growth as the newer sponge is significantly less dense than my older sponge. I wasn't entirely pleased with the overall quality and hope this is just an issue for one batch of these sponges and not the trend for AquaClear sponges in the future.

The sponges do their job, but with a denser sponge they could do their job better. I usually trust Hagen products, but I am concerned with this sponge's decrease in quality and hope this isn't indicative of Hagen products in general.
