From Amazon

Hail, Holy Queen: The Mother of God in the Word of God is theologian Scott Hahn's follow-up to his bestselling The Lamb's Supper. Like the previous book, Hail, Holy Queen melds autobiographical reflections, scriptural interpretation, and historical anecdotes in an accessible style to clarify some sophisticated points of Catholic theology. From the book's first sentence ("For all my newfound piety, I was still fifteen years old, and all too conscious of 'cool'"), the author's assured voice will capture the reader's interest. Readers outside Catholicism who are mystified by the centrality of Mary in Catholic devotion, and Catholics who wish to become more knowledgeable and reflective about a central aspect of their faith, will be especially drawn to Hail, Holy Queen. Among the book's most interesting claims is Hahn's contention that Marian devotion has shaped common ideas about motherhood. Hahn's teenage consciousness of cool made him ashamed of his mother. That kind of shame, he argues, helps to shape many Christians' ideas about Mary. And yet, citing John's Gospel, Hahn writes, "As He hung dying on the cross, in His last will and testament, Jesus left us a mother." Hail, Holy Queen charts a course from shame to respect and love. --Michael Joseph Gross

From Publishers Weekly

Roman Catholics have long had a reputation for their devotion to the woman known as the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Hahn, a convert to Catholicism, is uniquely qualified to both explain and justify the practice. A former Protestant minister who once condemned Marian piety as idolatrous, Hahn's theological writings (Rome Sweet Home; The Lamb's Supper) now illuminate his adopted faith for many a cradle Catholic. His treatment of the woman many consider the mother of God is accessible theology, written in the style of one who is skilled in making lofty ideas understandable and interesting. Using the Bible and scholarly sources, Hahn asserts that Mary was given by Christ to be the mother of all Christians, and that those who do not accept her as part of their family are woefully bereft. He goes on to trace the Church's high regard for Mary to the early days of Christianity, when, he writes, Mary was regarded as the "new Eve" and was identified with the "ark of the new covenant." Hahn also deals carefully with the Catholic Church's teaching on Mary's immaculate conception and assumption into heaven, and answers the objections of those who, as he once did, regard devotion to Mary as akin to goddess worship. Although he writes mainly to enlighten fellow Catholics about the basis for the Church's great reverence for Mary, Hahn's well-researched work will be instructive to anyone interested in the history of the Church's teaching on this subject. (Apr.)Forecast: Hahn's most recent book, The Lamb's Supper, has sold more than 60,000 copies for Doubleday. Given the widespread interest in Mary among Catholics, this title should do even better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Mar 6 2004
This review is from: Hail, Holy Queen (Hardcover)
Using types(somewhat of a foreshadow)throughout the Old Testament, Scott Hahn attempts and does well in proving almost all the Catholic teachings on Mary and why she deserves our veneration. This is great for all Catholics and Protestants who wonder what the whole deal with Catholics honoring Mary so much is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple, charitable explanation of Marian doctrine, Feb 1 2004

This review is from: Hail, Holy Queen (Hardcover)
Scott Hahn has presented here a simple, easy-to-read explanation of "The Mother of God in the Word of God" - Catholic Marian teaching as presented in the Holy Scriptures.

Catholic or protestant could read this little book and get a good basic hold of exactly what the Church teaches about Mary, and why, based on the Holy Scriptures.

For the Catholic, this book will give you the ability to understand what we teach about Mary, to appreciate her as she is shown directly and foreshadowed in the Holy Scriptures, and to explain about her to those who do not have the incalculable privilege of knowing her.

For the protestant, this book will give you an understanding of why we believe that the Mother of God is worthy of the veneration (NOT WORSHIP!!!) that we give her; why she can hear our prayers, is able and willing to give us her help, and is indeed able to intercede for us with her own prayers (we intercede for each other in this way, do we not?).

This book is not loaded with a lot of theo-technical jargon, but is presented in easy language to read. Five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, Book on Marian typology in the Old & New Testaments, Sep 13 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Hail, Holy Queen (Hardcover)
Dr. Hahn, the noted Biblical scholar and perhaps the most influential convert to the Catholic faith since Chesterton, gives a persepective on the Blessed Virgin that is refreshing and enlightining at the same time. He shows how Mary, is not only prominently figured in the Book of Revelation, but is "typed" (typology- the study of Old Testament scriptures prefiguring people and things of the New Testament, i.e. like our Lord's Passion and Resurection)within the context of the Old Testament, as the Ark of the Covenant. He also provides personal information on his own conversion experience and what the Blessed Virgin means to him. He also recommends all Christians to pray the Rosary at the end (a great prayer if I do say so myself). Catholics and particularly Marian devotees will definetly want this book in their libraries. Protestants with open minds (and hearts) may also find this book fascinating. Evangelicals should realize that our Lord Jesus would find little fault with us, if our "great sin" was to love and honor (not worship)his Mother, which he loves with the Heart of Divine Charity.
