5.0 out of 5 stars Great for all who like rock (and roll) music, Jun 25 2003

This is a lovely account of Chuck Berry as told by himself and many other famous musicians (Keith Richards, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen etc. etc.) as they prepare for a concert with a Keith Richards-organized band. What I think is unusual about it and what makes it one of the best "rock films" is that it clearly also presents Chuck as the often-difficult character he clearly is instead of being a hagiography. In fact, knowing this and seeing his humanity, makes the music all the more powerful. Keith Richards (as so often) is priceless, his musical contribution is superb. Chuck "correcting" Keith on his intro to "O Carol" is wonderful. Can you hear the difference between his and Chuck's rendition? The final concert is superb with all the guest stars appearing and keeping a lowish profile. The stars are Berry and, even though he tries very hard not to overshadow the man, Richards who shows us (once again) that there is no one who plays Chuck Berry better than Keith.

I recommend it to any one who likes rock music. Berry is a giant and here he is with other giants.

Of course now it needs to be on DVD....

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, Aug 12 2000

This review is from: Hail Hail Rock N Roll (VHS Tape)
A lot of criticisms could be leveled at Chuck Berry as a human being, but this movie displays the original that he is. He has charisma, and humor, and talent, and it's all on display here. One flaw is--being the control freak Keith Richards says he is--Berry really controls interviews with family and his secretary. He literally cuts off the interview with his wife, and the jail-questions with his administrator (who charmingly tries to avoid saying anything that will reveal her age!) But Berry trying to censor details of his life I suppose reveals a major detail in itself. I'm a Stones freak, and it was endearing to see Keith having to act subordinate to his idol. The several times in the movie when Chuck comes up to Keith while Keith is playing, you can see Keith thinking, "Oh, God, I hope he likes the way I'm playing here!" Keith Richards acting like a shy school-boy in the face of a more dominant boy on the playground only makes me a bigger Stones fan. Keith was willing to put up with Berry's tantrums, etc., because he so reveres Berry, and wanted people to see this film. Berry has talent, baby. What few rock stars have. Most have a gimmick and an attitude, and nothing more. And few of them will be having documentaries made about them when they are in their 60's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loving Tribute to a man who really did it his way., Feb 4 2000

Forget Frank Sinatra...Keith Richard's amazing 'Hail Hail Rock and Roll' leaves no doubt about who is the most important influence on contemporary music.

Taylor Hackford, who did the wonderful music narrative 'The Idolmaker' directs this documentary, which includes a great live concert accompanying. The glue that holds the deal together, though, is the presence of Richards, as producer and musical director. His exchanges with Berry, filmed as is, concerning the film's content are classic. A Bruce Springsteen recount of his early days opening for Berry at a concert in New Jersey is worth the price of admission alone.

Great interviews with Roy Orbison, John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Jerry Lee Lewis, and the comedy team of Little Richard and Bo Diddley.

Wonderful film, beautiful honest portrait of a very complicated musical genius.
