Additional features include: multiple possible endings depending on choices made, and fluid anime style animation.

Adventure and Romance in the Twilight of the Shogunate Era

Japan's Edo Period was drawing to a close. The Tokugawa shogunate, which had held power in the country for more than 200 years, found itself challenged by the imperial court, and by several feudal domains who had chaffed under shogunal rule. In this midst of this political unrest, an organization rose to prominence: The Shinsengumi. Originally formed to protect the street of Kyoto from master less samurai, they came to represent the last, tragic bastion of the honor-bound samurai culture that had defined much of Japan's history.

In Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, a young woman by the name of Chizuru comes to Kyoto in search of her missing father, and soon encounters danger and the Shinsengumi in quick succession. When it becomes clear the Shinsengumi are also searching for her father, Chizuru is put under their protection. But odd things are afoot in Kyoto-possibly even supernatural happenings. Can Chizuru navigate this maze of mortal danger and political intrigue? Amidst so much mystery and death, can she find romance?

3.0 out of 5 stars Replay Value Dec 26 2012

Well the first three chapters is pretty linear. You get a bit of dialogue change but stuff doesn't really happen until the later chapters. Even then, if you've watched the anime you can pretty much guess how things will turn out. There's no skipping already viewed parts so if you're buying this to get all the endings then you'll be in it for a while.

Other than the replay value, it's not a bad game and you get to name the lead character whatever you wish.

Pros:
* Huge story with lots of detail.
* Lots of characters with depth and personality.
* Multiple character endings gives you lots of extra time with this story.
* Periodically you get to choose the direction of the story and customize your experience.
* Can fast forward through the story after the first read through.
* The romantic part of the story is well balanced so that both female and male players can enjoy the game without being annoying.

Cons:
* Very heavy on the text, if you don't mind lots of reading then this isn't really a con, but if lots of reading isn't for you then this game is going to be very tedious for you.
* Not enough of the choose your own adventure options to spice up the experience.
* Could of used some game play elements to break up the monotony of reading for hours.
* Getting a bad ending after all that reading can be disappointing.

The story and characters are the game, this is basically a rpg graphic novel. You read from the perspective of Chizuru (or change her name to your something else) a young girl that travels to Kyoto in search for her father, he has disappeared after taking a job in Kyoto. Soon after arriving in Kyoto Chizuru witnesses a bloody street battle and is kidnapped by the victorious group called the Shinsengumi. The Shinsengumi are also looking for Chizuru's father and decide to keep her around to help find him. The big question is why is the Shinsengumi looking for Chizuru's father and what is going to happen to Chizuru while in the care of the Shinsengumi.

The game play part of the graphic novel is this. As you read through the story you occasionally have 2 or 3 choices to make. Your choices not only form the path of the story but they also appeal to certain male members of the Shinsengumi. As you progress through the game a romance gage for each of the six main male characters will fill up depending on you choices. At a certain point in the story the character with the highest gage score becomes the stories ending path, this gives the game multiple possible endings.

Final thoughts:
Depending on how fast you read will determine your games length. If you get a ending that doesn't feel right to you the potential to have multiple play through will really extends your time. Fortunately you can fast forward through dialog that you have already read and will automatically stop when you arrive at a choice section. The graphics are good and help to immerge the reader into the story, I would like to see more games like this one even though it isn't really a game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yeah for Original Japanese Voice Acting! Feb 15 2012

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
The only thing I was worryied about with this English version of Hakuoki is that the company might not keep the original Japanese voice acting. I got the game on Feb 14 (from my local game stop, the amazon pre-ordered copy is still on the road) and yeah the voice acting is still in the original Japanese! Yes!

Hakuoki is one of the top names in Otome games, and apart from great character design and story lines, this game features some of the best voice actors in Japan, which to me is a must have for a visual novel style game.

I really hope this game can sell well in the US, so other games of this series can be introduced as well. And maybe some day Koei's neoromance games will also see its way in the US market.

==============================================
One update after playing through the English version: I realized the English version does not include the extra story sections (hakuoki ibun-senyu emaki). In the Japanese psp version, you get access to extra text stories (with voice acting) for all characters once you finish one character's route. Reading the story will unlock an extra CG of that character. In the English version, you still get the CG after beating the game, but there's no story, which is a shame. Because of this, I would like to take half a star off this English version if I can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Visual Novel! Feb 15 2012
By Hakuoki_fangirl - Published on Amazon.com
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Playing Hakuoki, I can see why this game has been such a huge success in Japan. I know a lot of reviews make it sound like this is a dating sim, but it is much more than that. Hakuoki takes place in the middle of a war that actually happened in real life. Most of the characters and events are (loosely) based off of real life, so there is a historical aspect to the game. But the fantasy and romance prevent it from getting bogged down with history.

The art is beautiful and the Japanese vocal cast is amazing. Idea Factory spared no expense with their voice actors, getting some of the top in the field.

As long as you feel comfortable playing a game from a female's prospective, I think that this game actually caters well to both genders. The only reason I could see someone not liking it is if they purchased it not knowing what a visual novel is. As the name implies, it is completely text-based with no actual game-play aside from choosing paths like in a choose-your-own-adventure novel. If you like to read books, I think this game might be just up your ally!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely addictive Feb 16 2012

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game off the PSN (so I could play it on my Vita when I get it) and I have been very satisfied with my purchase. Gaming has always been about the story and the characters to me and this game, while lacking in actual gameplay, has that. As you make your choices, you learn more and more about each of the characters, fleshing out the story and learning more about what the time period was like. The story takes quite a few liberties, combining supernatural elements with historical events. The artwork and the music is so beautiful, I'm actually considering buying the limited edition of the game off of Amazon just for the art book and the soundtrack. The game has a very handy rewind/fast forward option so you can replay certain events or fast forward through the text you already read if you choose to go back and choose a different option.

Disclaimer: This is a very text heavy game. If you don't like reading, don't buy it. If you think you would be bored making choices and then reading the outcome (similar to a choose your own story book), this game is not for you.

Edit (2/25): You can't play the game on the Vita yet but according to Aksys games, they are working on getting it approved by Sony.
