Product Description

Quill & Quire

Declaring Hiromi Goto’s new novel at least 50 pages too short for its visionary plot and complex heroine may sound like a backhanded compliment, but the fact is that Half World does not do full justice to its own almost hallucinatory power. Like a Hieronymous Bosch painting come to life, Half World throws readers into a violent struggle to restore cosmic balance between the Realm of Flesh, the Realm of Spirit, and the Half World. The first two will be familiar to readers with a passing knowledge of world religions – the Flesh Realm is the material world in which we live out our mortal lives, the Spirit Realm a blissful domain attained by souls that have escaped the karmic cycle of death and rebirth. Borrowing from Buddhist, Christian, and other spiritual traditions, Goto creates a unique, purgatory-like place, Half World, where souls work off the karmic debts acquired in life before passing into pure spirit. When a cataclysm severs the three realms, the Half Worlders are locked into a perpetually repeating nightmare in which they relive their worst sins and traumas. The novel begins centuries later, when a miraculously pregnant Half Worlder escapes into the Realm of Flesh and gives birth to Melanie, a human child who may have the power to restore balance to the realms. Teenage Melanie’s journey back into Half World reads like an extended absurdist nightmare, with Melanie battling the sinister Mr. Glueskin, a cunning but insane creature holding her mother hostage. The violence and cruelty of Half World may frighten some young readers, but those with a taste for dark fantasy (and gore) will be thrilled by Melanie’s confrontation with her own fears and Goto’s nightmarish creatures (some of which are depicted in occasional stark illustrations by Jillian Tamaki). What’s missing is more of Melanie’s crucial “humble origins” story, the human years of poverty and humiliation leading to her heroic spiritual journey. Her dramatic confrontation with Mr. Glueskin could also have been further filled out without losing the reader’s interest. With a heroine and an alternative world this interesting, why not give the reader a little more? --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Review

“Half World is a haunting combination of a coming-of age novel and a spiritual quest, a mad funhouse of horrors and a tale of redemption and love. Wonderfully odd, and quite unforgettable.” - Neil Gaiman

“Half World is Boschean delight à la Goto: a magical, madcap, and deliciously creepy tale of tribulations, terror and triumph; a girl-power adventure in screaming jelly-toned colours." - Nalo Hopkinson

“Myths and monsters, love and terror -- Hiromi Goto is a master storyteller!” - Ellen Klages, author of The Green Glass Sea

“Half World is an absolute treasure of a book, one of those hidden gems that deserves as wide an audience as possible.” - Charles de Lint

“Like a Hieronymous Bosch painting come to life, Half World throws readers into a violent struggle to restore cosmic balance between the Realm of Flesh, the Realm of Spirit, and the Half World…. those with a taste for dark fantasy (and gore) will be thrilled by Melanie’s confrontation with her own fears and Goto’s nightmarish creatures” - Quill & Quire

“Half World's protagonist is an agent of change in a fixed netherworld, and for young adults who at times feel overwhelmed by life, this is a powerful message indeed…. Through charting Melanie's demanding trek, the novel suggests that by making good choices for ourselves we can overcome the ennui of our own half-worlds. Goto's Half World is a crazy, dark and yet cathartic journey. Hang on for the ride.” - Vancouver Sun

“A dark, one-of-a-kind epic about familial love.” - Georgia Straight

“In Half World, readers are taken on a thrilling, poignant adventure where Eastern and Western mythologies are woven together. Commonwealth award-winning author Hiromi Goto has created a dark, otherworldly page-turner that will most certainly appeal to young adult readers regardless of whether they are speculative fiction enthusiasts. Goto’s elegant prose is graced by about a dozen black and white illustrations by the award-winning Jillian Tamaki. Her brush and ink illustrations superbly capture Melanie’s journey and the turmoil of the Half World. Goto has created an absolutely riveting tale that moves with cinematic pacing and vividness. Half World is nothing short of a masterpiece.” - Canadian Children's Book News

“Author Hiromi Goto…has created a story that is complex, unsettling (sometimes downright stomach-churning), thought-provoking and not an easy read. For those who stay with it, however, the results are rewarding.” - Montreal Gazette

“Hopeful and beautifully strange.” - Kirkus Reviews

“It’s a fast-moving and provocative journey with cosmically high stakes, and one that should readily appeal to fans of dark, nightmarish fantasy.” - Publisher’s Weekly

“[A] rich, elegant, and compelling novel.” - The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

“Goto has created an unusual fantasy horror novel that’s something like a Gaiman tale with a dash of Asian magic. Readers who want a different kind of fantasy and who like a villain who makes the skin crawl should enjoy this quick read. It’s a rare treat and belongs in most YA collections.” - School and Library Journal

“Entirely original and unclassifiable. Richly imagined phantasmagoric scenes decorate every iridescent page. Goto’s stylish, incendiary prose lifts Half World above the YA category; this novel crosses age boundaries and could just as easily be categorized as a book for adults.” - Sunburst Award Jury

“The sheer weirdness of the plot, coupled with Goto’s gripping narration, will make it difficult for readers to turn away from this book. It is a great title to recommend to fantasy fans who are familiar with—and enjoy—warped fiction.” - Children’s Literature

“Readers looking for a dark, horrific fantasy or an unusual heroine will enjoy this tale.” - Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA)

4.0 out of 5 stars a refreshing story, a believable heroine and an odd yet delightful world, Jan 30 2012

This review is from: Half World (Hardcover)
Pros:

A fascinating mythology
Interesting cast of characters
A believable heroine
Teaches valuable lessons

Cons:

A few times the plot tended to be predictable
The introduction could have been done better

I wasn't quite sure what to expect with Half World but after reading the prologue I quickly got into the story. The prologue tells of the three realms: the Realm of Flesh, Half World and the Realm of Spirit. I was quickly captured by the idea of these three realms. Though the introduction after the prologue put me off a bit because the dialogue and the characters seemed two-dimensional and I believe the author could have done it better. It wasn't very consistent when you compare it to the later chapters which were written fairly well.

I sympathized with Melanie and thought her character was believable and well done. She wasn't a heroine right from the beginning but rather grew into the role, gaining courage later on. The other characters where just as interesting to read about. And it's interesting to note that Goto did quite a few female characters compared to the males. Haven't you noticed a lot of times, especially in fantasy, there is a wise and kind old man but never a woman. But in Half World, we had Ms. Wei, who I have to say is my favorite character and I really enjoyed how she spoke in third person all the time - very lovable!

Although a few times the plot was predictable, Half World was still a wonderful read. Half World was such a bizarre place and Goto described it so vividly. A delightfully original story and I'm excited to read the sequel, Darkest Light, to dive back into the world and see what's in store next. If you want a refreshing story, a believable heroine and an odd yet delightful world then make sure to check out Half World!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable for young and old alike, July 4 2010

This was the first book of Hiromi Goto's that I read after hearing her read an excerpt at a lecture in university - and it got me hooked. Steeped in Japanese myth, Goto stays true to her Japanese-Canadian heritage in creating a vivid connection between the characters and places in Half-World. Focusing on difficulties with self-identity and maturation as a teenager, this book is by no means limited to the age group. The language Goto uses contributes to the imagery very much, and the story itself was unique and captivating.

It's what got me hooked on wanting anything she wrote, and I haven't been disappointed yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good quick read., Nov 24 2009

Half world was a good quick read, kid friendly and enjoyable. The book did have a Neil Gaiman feel to it, but I really wished it was longer and a little more involved with the characters and story backdrop. I found the environment in the book to be quite cool, but not detailed enough and also felt the same with some of the unique and fun characters within - the book just lacked a little depth. It brings forth this wonderful place and just kinda skims the surface of what's there and those that inhabit the land.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeously imagined and beautifully written!, Mar 26 2012
By Evie Seo (Bookish blog) "Evie" - Published on Amazon.com
Half World was absolutely enthralling! I loved every single page of this book and ended up kicking myself for not picking it up earlier! Seriously, how did I miss it? It's such a sparkly wonder of a book! An excellent, entirely original and thoroughly enjoyable story that not only compels and entertains, but also touches your heart and makes you realize the importance of life, family, and hope. Packed with action, mythology, symbolism and fantastic creatures, Half World delivers just the right mixture of adventure, excitement and magic.

Long, long, long ago, before mortals began to inscribe mortal religions onto stone tablets and parchment, there was a time of the Three Realms: the Realms of Flesh, the Realm of Spirit, and Half World.

The Three Realms used to be connected, allowing people to move from one to another, in due time, as each person lives, dies, half-lives, and eventually becomes a Spirit. The sacred cycle of life and death was very important, it ensured balance and harmony. But then someone of something divided the cycle. The link between the Realms was severed, bringing about chaos and despair. Before that happened, Half World was an intermediary place where the troubled could work through their mortal suffering before they were allowed to move on to the Realm of Spirit. Now, those stuck in the Half World are caught in a loop, doomed to relive the pain and suffering of their lives. Melanie Tamaki, a chubby, unpopular 14-year-old girl, is the only person in the whole world capable of breaking the binding and reuniting the Realms. Determined to save her mother (who was kidnapped by the evil Mr. Glueskin), she's about to embark on a very dangerous journey, and one that will change her life forever.

And what a breath taking journey that was! I won't lie, I really enjoyed myself. Half World is extraordinarily imagined, vibrant, and engaging. It's the kind of book that will appeal not only to middle grade or young adult readers, but also to older teens and adults who will definitely find pleasure in re-discovering how fun and entertaining YA fantasy adventures can be. I really loved Hiromi's smoothly flowing, descriptive and efficient prose. This book reads more like a middle grade novel than a young adult one, but at the same time there's an air of sophistication and profoundness to it, elevating it to a whole new level. It's an intelligent and meaningful read. Above all, it's a great, fast-paced adventure book that is just so unbelievably fun to read.

Melanie was a great protagonist. She was perfect in all her imperfections. Not your usual long-legged, beautiful, charismatic heroine, but rather a quiet little mouse who went through a lot in her short life. To Melanie every day presents a new challenge. She's not the brightest kid at school. She struggles a lot to keep up. Bullied by other kids and neglected by her mother, she only finds joy in exploring the dusty shelves of a local second-hand bookstore. And don't expect any ground-shaking character transformation here. Even the quest to bring her mother back from the Half World will not turn Melanie into a tough, brave and gorgeous heroine. She'll still be the same awkward kid. Slow and easily tired. Scared, lost, desperate. And yet persistent and determined to save her mom. Always pushing through, never giving up, despite fear and pain, and not really knowing what to do next. She was wonderful. Real and convincing. And all her flaws only made me like her more. I found myself really engaged in Melanie's story, cheering for her, laughing and crying with her. I couldn't wait to find out what will happen next.

What I loved the most about this book, though, was its rich and flavorful mythological tapestry. I loved all the Asian influences and the symbolism that Hiromi so brilliantly weaved into the plot. It was fresh, unique, atmospheric and simply delightful. From nightmarish, creeptastic creatures to unsettling gore scenes, this book is nothing like I've ever read before. I highly recommend picking it up! It's a dazzling and beautifully drawn tale that will both thrill and amaze you with its eerie scenes and totally unexpected plot developments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Half World, Mar 26 2012
By Star - Published on Amazon.com
Half World is an enjoyable and quick read, which I felt was like a dark faery tale, if I had to classify it. This is a unique tale from my perspective as I'm not versed in Asian lore. Melanie's trying to rescue her mother from Mr. Glueskin and along the way, is beginning to realize her potential and place in the world. I thought it was very empowering to the every day teenager, who doesn't fit in with what is considered "acceptable". I'm not sure I would consider her a 'hero', even though she is on the hero's journey. Does Melanie have what it takes to rescue her mother and save the Three Realms? Pick up this wonderful book and find out!!
