Product Description

From Amazon.com

On previous solo outings, and in her work with Transglobal Underground and Jah Wobble, the sultry Natacha Atlas has adapted her voice to music from all over the globe. Her heart--and background--is very much in the Middle East, and on Halim she's made her own Middle Eastern record. It's not traditional, by any means, but it's in the tradition: songs of love and spirit. In terms of arrangements there are plenty of concessions to the West, but there's absolutely no doubt where it's all rooted. This is all for the best. Atlas is a world-class singer, but on these songs she can really let herself go, reach back into herself and squeeze out every ounce of emotion. The centerpiece, though, is "Ya Ahli Ehda," recorded in Cairo with an Egyptian orchestra, where you can almost feel the dry heat in your face. It's saying a great deal, but Halim might be the most potent record steeped in the past of the eastern Mediterranean since Ofra Haza's Fifty Gates of Wisdom. It's that good. --Chris Nickson

4.0 out of 5 stars come and see....., May 31 2004

i think this album is really great, but i only gave it four stars because the first few tracks are awsome, easy to dance to and thouroughly enjoyable (read cross-cultural appeal), then most of the rest of the album slows down, and gets a little more "traditional". this in it's self isn't so bad, but many of the tracks are very long (5+ min.), which in turn makes the whole album long, and can leave you feeling a little emotionally spent if you listen to the entire thing from beginning to end.
still, it's worth every penny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take me with you, Jun 10 2003
This review is from: Halim (Arabic) (Audio CD)
This is a MUST buy if you're an Atlas fan because to me, this album has a totally different feel from her other work like Geddida. This has less of a european production feel to it, more faithful to middle eastern instruments and sounds. If you've not owned an Atlas record and you enjoy most of the Six Degrees stuff, this is for you..
