5.0 out of 5 stars Love this toaster oven April 3 2014

I was intrigued by the way the door went up instead of down and it has proven to be a great toaster oven. It is really easy to put things in and take things out when it gets hot. I wish it had a control that let you have only the top or only the bottom element on but both are always on - great for toast and pizza, not so good for small cakes etc. But I love it's size and we mostly use it for toast.

3.0 out of 5 stars Compact, Multi-purpose Small Appliance ... Sept. 26 2013
By delicateflower152 - Published on Amazon.com
Vine Customer Review of Free Product
The "Hamilton Beach 31334 Easy Reach Toaster Oven, Metallic" is a compact, multi-purpose small appliance that may prove useful in your kitchen. Having a footprint that is no larger than the Kitchenaid KMT400 toaster, it should fit into most appliance garages as well as into standard kitchen cabinets having higher shelves.

With the rolling door closed, the "Hamilton Beach 31334 Easy Reach Toaster Oven" measures approximately 16 " wide X 8 " high X 11 " deep. With the rolling door opened, this small appliance measures approximately 16 " wide X 10 " high X 10" deep.

The door that rolls up, rather than swinging down or out, makes this small appliance well suited for more narrow countertops. Easy removal for cleaning is another plus.

The "Hamilton Beach 31334 Easy Reach Toaster Oven" does a very nice job toasting whole grain, artisan breads. The interior - approximately 10 " X 9" - easily accommodates odd sizes and thicknesses of breads and rolls. The description states this toaster oven will accommodate four slices. It seems those slices would have to be smaller than average or would have to touch each other in order for four to fit. The darkness indicator dial is small and somewhat difficult to read; it would improve this product if it were clearer and more precise.

Baking in the "Hamilton Beach 31334 Easy Reach Toaster Oven" is a somewhat hit-or-miss proposition. The lack of precision on the timer and temperature controls has an impact on both baking time and product appearance. You will have to experiment to determine the appropriate time and temperature settings in order to produce acceptable results.

If you have only a small item to brown, the broiling function may be useful. However, you will want to watch your food carefully to prevent burning - another downside of the less than precise control knobs.

All three functions on the "Hamilton Beach 31334 Easy Reach Toaster Oven" cause this small appliance's exterior to become extremely hot. Air temperature around the unit went from 77.5 degrees to 88 degrees when I toasted bread. The surface temperature went from 77.5 degrees to 285 degrees! I used a Thermapen Instant Read Thermometer to measure the temperatures. The sides as well as the top might easily burn one's skin. Should anyone, particularly children and the elderly, who both have delicate skin, accidentally touch the exterior after the unit has been on they could easily sustain a severe burn.

The "Hamilton Beach 31334 Easy Reach Toaster Oven" might be suitable for some seeking a compact toaster oven. However, individuals, who desire an appliance having more accurate controls and better insulation, would do well to look at other models of toaster oven.

4.0 out of 5 stars Toasts exceptionally well Sept. 24 2013
By Kathleen San Martino - Published on Amazon.com
Vine Customer Review of Free Product
This toaster oven is great for small jobs. The picture of the pizza cooking in this toaster oven is very deceiving because only a small personal-sized pizza no larger than 9" x 10" will fit. The depth (front to back) is 11-1/2" if you include the handle and knobs on back; width is 15-1/2"; and height is 9". The cord length is 33".

This toaster will easily fit four slices of bread. I toasted two slices of rye bread and the toast came out fantastic; crisp and dry the way rye bread usually toasts. It was toasted evenly on both sides except that the bottom sides of the bread had the rack lines, which is expected. It actually toasted better than any actual toaster I've ever owned and I always disliked using a toaster oven to toast bread.

Below are the PROS and CONS from my perspective.

PROS
It has a small footprint.

The top comes off easily for washing.

The unit's roll top makes it easy to reach what is cooking.

The price is reasonable in my opinion.

It toasts very well.

It comes with a crumb tray, rack, and baking pan that can be easily removed and cleaned.

A broiling option is available by using the high rack position in the oven and selecting the broil feature.

CONS:
The dials use mechanical timing so for the duration of the toasting cycle, there's a ticking sound from the timer.

The timer always has to be rotated beyond 10 minutes and then turned back to the time desired if the cooking, broiling, or toasting time is less than 10 minutes.

The timer has a maximum capacity of 30 minutes so if what's being cooked requires a longer time, it will have to be set two or three times during the cooking process.

The silver "paint" on the dial faceplate is slightly bubbled on the unit I received for review.

In summary, I think this is a great buy for those who need a toaster oven for small jobs or do not have much kitchen space. It's also cute, squat, and retro looking.

1.0 out of 5 stars Recall this product immediately! Door shattered during use! Jan. 29 2014
By Wilton Mui - Published on Amazon.com

So I bought this only 1 month ago! I was heating up some food in the toaster oven at 425 deg F for 10 minutes. While I was in the shower, I heard a little explosion and shattering glass. I rushed out and found that the toaster oven door shattered and sent glass flying about 5 feet away. Yes I will take a refund, no I don't want to pay for the return shipping, and no I do not want a replacement. And yes I filed a report with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. On a less serious note, my dinner was ruined, so it'd be nice if I could get a gift certificate to Chipotle or something.

2.0 out of 5 stars Warning - Big gap around the oven door, so not good for baking. No toast-setting , so not good for toasting Oct. 17 2013
By Pat - Published on Amazon.com

(1) There is a big gap around the oven door when the door is closed. I think oven doors should close better for baking. This is part of the design of this model, I can' t imagine why.

(2) You have to reset the toast setting every time you toast. This is part of the design. The persnickety process for resetting the toast setting (every time you make toast!) is not something you can do early in the morning without putting on your glasses. You have to turn the dial smoothly clockwise past a quarter-turn, then force the knob back counter-clockwise until the almost invisible indicator arrow points somewhere in between the 45-degree angle, black toast, and the 30-degree angle, raw toast. You may get perfect toast one time, but you cannot save the setting for the next time.

I can't see myself trying to teach my houseguests to use this toaster oven. An eight-year-old child can use most toaster ovens, but cannot exert enough force to turn the knob counter-clockwise on this one.

Apart from the functionality, the toaster oven is very cute, and the grey color goes perfectly with stainless steel. The big viewing window is nice, so that you can diligently watch the 5-minute toasting process, which you will have to do, since there is no usable toast setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal if you like the basics (old-school toaster oven) Oct. 24 2013
By Tom D. - Published on Amazon.com
Vine Customer Review of Free Product
The Hamilton Beach 31334 Easy Reach is what I call an "old school" toaster oven. There are no fancy electronic circuits or buttons to contend with - there is a basic temperature dial (up to 450 degrees) and a timer (up to 30 minutes). I've added a short video showing a pizza that I baked inside the oven - it also gives you a look at this toaster oven in action, complete with the ticking of the timer.

You can toast up to 4 slices of bread or 2 bagels (2 pieces each). The instruction manual that comes with the toaster oven gives recommended settings for specific items.

For example for toast it recommends having the temperature set to 450. There are 2 settings on the timer showing a slice of bread - both under 5 minutes. The first shows a half-shaded slice, the second one dark. I tried both and the first setting toasted perfectly - the second was a bit burnt for my tastes.

One quirk that I don't recall being the case with other toaster ovens is that you must turn the timer past 10 minutes and then roll back to any setting under 10 minutes. Not a big deal for me. The instructions also suggest that you unplug the device when not in use.

The instruction manual also offers suggested temperatures and times for general baking and broiling, both of which this toaster oven also does well.

Hotdogs come out great - then I toast the buns. Homemade pizza is also very popular in my house now. I use a Boboli pizza crust, some canned pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, olives, onions and a few other ingredients.

The removable roll-top door is convenient for cleaning and for when something falls off the rack. I like the baking pan, too - non-stick surface.

In a nutshell, the Hamilton Beach 31334 Easy Reach is a solid, well-made and back-to-the-basics toaster oven.
