4.0 out of 5 stars Great ice cream maker for its price Dec 30 2009
Having never used an ice cream maker I was not sure what to expect. This one works very well. I find it makes enough ice cream for 3-4 people, but if you need more you have to wait 22 hours for the bowl to freeze again.

Pro:
The ice cream is ready in about 30-40 minutes as long as you keep the bowl in the freezer.
It is small which makes storing it easy.
the unit comes apart in many pieces easily which makes it very easy to clean.

Con:
The unit is quite loud when running
The recipes it comes with are not the best, but you can find some great ones online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and fast, simple and easy April 17 2010
By Prism
I did a lot of research before purchasing this ice cream maker. I knew the price range, capacity and features I was interested in, and this Hamilton Beach was perfect.

Small enough that it doesn't take up a lot of room, yet it makes a good amount of smooth, creamy ice cream.

I've used it to make vegan ice cream, and it does a great job of it. I'm thoroughly happy with my choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars If at first you don't succeed, July 13 2009

try following the instructions.

If I had written my review based on our first attempt with this ice cream maker, I'd have given it one star. In fact, we were trying to find the receipt when it occurred to me: maybe I should have paid more attention to the instructions.
Sho' 'nuff, it worked.
First attempt, our freezer wasn't cold enough to thoroughly freeze the freezer bowl, and, I didn't thoroughly chill the ice cream mix. Result: milkshakes.
Then, I tried reducing the temperature in the freezer, and chilling the mix properly. Result: very good soft-serve ice cream!
Another tip: while packets of mix that you just add milk to are fine for quick ice cream, invest in a good homemade ice cream recipe book! There is a world of difference between packaged mixes and making your own with real cream and natural flavorings! And, with the latter, you can pack it into a freezer container and save it for later.
The biggest plus for this machine is the freezer bowl eliminates the need for often hard-to-find rock salt and lots of ice!
Just be sure to properly freeze the freezer bowl and chill the ingredients. Unless, of course, you're in the mood for a milkshake.

4.0 out of 5 stars fun and delicious Aug. 7 2009

I tried this machine yesterday for the first time. I was extremely happy with the ice cream maker. It was a little louder than I would have liked, but you get used to it after awhile. The only bad thing is that it took about 60 minutes, instead of the 20 to 40 that they say it should take. I had everything chilled and frozen like they said to do, so I don't know. When I first tasted the ice cream, I couldn't believe it!! It tasted like Breyer's. It was soft, so I put it in the freezer in individual freezer bowls for an hour or two and it was hard like the store bought. I used the basic recipe and it was perfect for my family. My husband it totally into Breyer's ice cream and won't eat anything else, but he liked this ice cream just fine! The clean up was easy. As soon as I had the canister cleaned and dryed, I immediately put it in the freezer. Today I made another batch and had the same perfect result and it was just as jummy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple to use, delicious results Aug. 23 2009
By romance reader - Published on Amazon.com
I received this ice cream maker as a gift a week ago. Since then, I've made three batches of ice cream (all from the recipes included with the machine) and I've found that the ice cream maker works very well. The ice cream is quite soft when it comes out of the machine, but if you pack it into a freezer safe container and put it in the freezer for about 3 hours, it firms up nicely. And it is really delicious!

I found the machine quite easy to use. It is a little noisy, but not too bad. The machine itself only runs for 20 to 30 minutes, but the whole process takes a while (chilling the freezer bowl, then making and chilling the ice cream base, then allowing the ice cream to set in the freezer) so you do need to plan ahead. But that isn't a criticism of the machine -- it's just the way the process works.

I would recommend this product.

2.0 out of 5 stars from experienced ice cream maker April 29 2010

I have used several ice cream makers and by far this is the worst. It is noisy, and takes way to long for the ice cream to churn. Yes, I properly chilled the ice cream mix, yes I properly froze the bowl(second time made sure it was really really frozen. The bowl just does not stay cold long enough to do what it needs to do, to avoid a soupier mix.. Although that still can be frozen into ice cream in the freeze, it just gets a little icy. Properly chilled and churned ice cream should take no longer than 20 minutes. and this design just doesn't do it.
It might work better if your freezer is large enough to put the ice cream maker in the freezer while its churn it is churning. Don't waist your time...or money.
Buy one that is properly insulated to maintain the cold throughout the churning process. Remember a proper machine should take no more than 20 minutes.
As for this machine, It will work, sort of, it is easy to clean, easy to use.

hope that helps

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good! June 14 2012
By NVAN - Published on Amazon.com
I spent several week reading the reviews on all the ice cream makers and had decided on the Cuisinart. But since I had to order the color I wanted (teal) I decided to pick up this HB one locally (in Teal). I figured I would try it and if I didn't like it I would return it and go with my first choice. But it works pretty darn good and will keep it. Made my first batch in 15 min.
I don't get the complaint about the noise It's a lot quieter than the old motorized models. No loader than a mixer maybe less.
If you expecting Home Made Ice Cream to be hard like store bought, then you should just buy a pint. Because this item and any other ice cream maker will not make you happy.
Planning many more flavors!!!! Yum!!!!
