Review

"Prof. Durrell's approach to teaching German as a Foreign Language takes into account how German is actually used in a variety of contexts and registers. His use of 'real' examples to illustrate the language is innovative and much to be applauded."

Dr Nils Langer, Reader in German Linguistics, University of Bristol, UK

From the Back Cover

"Durrell's third edition of Hammer gave teachers and students of German an excellent, comprehensive, up-to-date, and user-friendly account of German grammar. The completeness of the survey, with its sound and imaginative explanations and its incorporation of new spelling and punctuation reform, will make this edition an even more indispensable guide to the advanced German learner in English-speaking countries than its predecessor and an invaluable reference work for the general linguist."
--Professor Michael Clyne, University of Melbourne, Australia

Considered the preeminent English-language grammar reference for the German language, Hammer's German Grammar and Usage will aid your learning of the language as it is spoken today. Professor Martin Durrell avoids encumbering you with prescribed rules and instead bases his coverage on current usage, including regional variations and registers of the modern standard language.

Thoroughly revised and updated, the fourth edition includes new spelling and punctuation that reflect the German grammar reforms, updated examples, expanded tables summarizing basic points, and a glossary of the grammatical terms.

Its dual role as a grammar reference and manual of current usage makes this book an essential part of your language-learning library. If you are an intermediate or advanced level student, a teacher, or a reader of German in need of a refresher, you will find Hammer's German Grammar and Usage invaluable to your understanding of the language.

Also available from McGraw-Hill as a companion to this book, Practicing German Grammar: A Workbook, Second Edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic help and every para is directly useful April 6 2012
By P. Chandrasekaran - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I got this book after hesitating to do so because some reviews said it is only for advanced students.
Actually this can be really useful even to beginners.
It is very systematic and treats every aspect of the language in detail and in a very clear and definite manner.
I was really helped a lot when I read the gender section right at the beginning. It greatly helped me in removing a big hurdle with German. Every section and even para is a gem. The main thing is that it gives you the pattern and not simply an isolated piece of fact about German. For example, it says in general verbal nouns ending -t are feminine in gender and otherwise they are masculine. This has made a big difference. Even my native German tutors have not provided such a insight.
Buy this as soon you know this.
Everytime I read a page of this book I come out significantly informed and confident and eager to learn more.

I wish they had eBook of this to read on the go instead of having to carry the rather heavy book. But it is a pleasure to have it around oneself.
